”Eating with the seasons is a way of honoring abundance. By going to meet it when and where it arrives. A world of produce houses and grocery stores enables the practice of having what you want and when you want it”
My mom once said to me, "I only eat food that comes from the store, not from the ground." When the shock subsided and I could finally form words again, I asked, genuinely curious, where she thought the food from the store came from. She told me that she knows it comes from the ground but she doesn't have to see it so it's different. Different in the same way that people couldn't fathom killing a cow but would happily eat a burger. (I'm not judging, nor am I absolved of the hypocrisy - I eat fish). But the point is we are so far removed from reality that we could never even fathom not having our favorite foods available every single day of the year. And yet there is still such a terrible scarcity mindset. "If I don't buy it now, if I don't have it now, I may never get the opportunity to again!" This way of life carries over into every aspect of our lives and creates an atmosphere of constantly living for the future rather than living for what we currently have.

I had never seen the physical copy of the book. I had even considered reading it on my kindle, not thinking much about it until someone yesterday said that it was like an ikea type book. I don’t know what they meant until I went to the library and saw it in all its glory. Definitely a book to read physically, as sadly an ereader couldn’t compete.

Brilliant, experimental, and satirical. I couldn’t help but be reminded of “Godel Escher Bach” in the way different threads are weaved throughout this piece. I enjoyed so much of this story, the book within a book was very neat and the family matters had me gasping. As our main character says, sometimes you read a book and you get a little sad that there’s no way you could have written anything nearly as brilliant.

Is this book perfect? No. Is this book a really fun thriller? Yes! What a ride. Our narrator goes from being so unlikable, to being just so unhinged you’re kind of rooting for her. For this being a debut novel and a genre I don’t often read I was pretty impressed. The audiobook was fantastic and I devoted my whole evening to it. If you’re looking for social commentary about the housing crisis this isn’t the book for you, but it never pretends to be either. I could see this really working as a movie too!!

I'd like to know if anyone's read this book and liked it. I know it's about a Palestinian woman living in America but the rest of the story is lost on me. Like stuff just be shocking me every now and then
