  • Fall Readalong + Limited Time Quest Updates (9/1/26)

A few quick updates to share - a new app version was released a few days ago, please make sure your app is updated to see all available features!

Limited Time Quest Updates: We've majorly revamped the badge system for Limited Time Quests; now, you can earn the badge for reading just 1 book in the Quest, and finishing subsequent books will unlock decorations on your badge. See below for an example from the new Sponsored Limited Time Quest launched today: The Cozy Crimes of Shady Hallows (note: there is a bug on the app where the 3 decorated versions do not show - a fix will be available in the next day or two! In the meantime, reference this pic or the web to see all badge variations)

Part of our ethos at Pagebound is reading what you want when you want, while encouraging branching out of your comfort zone. With this new setup, you're rewarded for trying even one new book in a Limited Time quest (much like a Readalong!) while also being rewarded for each subsequent read. We hope this encourages folks to try new genres and authors, and alleviates needing to pick up a book you truly do not want to read just for a badge.

Fall 2026 Readalong is live!: Head to the Discuss tab to see the picks - the readalong will run through the end of November!

Small product update in this new version: you can now post from a specific page or % in the book forums even when the book is not in "currently reading" status

We'll be back soon with more major product updates!

    Happy Reading, Jennifer & Lucy

This was an okay late-night read. The story was okay, the relationship was a bit weird at times, and I really didn’t understand why Riku acted the way he did when they went on their first official date. I also couldn’t really grasp why his chef suddenly appeared out of nowhere or how this foundation was supposed to develop into a relationship. The age gap also wasn’t for me, sorry. Proper communication probably would’ve made this a lot shorter. I was a bit bored throughout the whole thing, but tbh, I just wanted something that would make me tired so I could finally go to sleep. Spoiler: It didn’t help.

You know, I think I read this at just the very perfect time, and it charmed me. I had a horrific week, afflicted by a severe migraine, and this one kept me company in the better moments. And it was cosy and easy and I loved Sophie and Calcifer and I think I just happily glossed over all the things I didn't like, because, eh, it was what I needed. And that's a darn valid (if niche) mood I needed to meet. Had I rated it immediately, well, I might have even hit that 5 star button.

Howwwwwever… I put this review off for long enough that my rose tinted glasses came off. And I'm glad I did, to give a more balanced viewpoint.

Because, listen, I remembered what a complete tantrum throwing, pathetic, heartbreaking fuckboy man-child Howl was, and how much it annoyed me lol. At the time, I also just fully disregarded their creeping “romance” (emphasis on the creep lol), since it was, frankly, so very, very ignorable. Not only does she deserve better, she knows better, so it made absolutely no sense whatsoever that she would even consider him as more than a friend (and frankly he needs to get ship-shape with his idea of friendship, too). Demisexual/romantic me is completely over the idea that we have to bulldoze in a romance to every damn book! This book could've been perfect if written without that entire aspect.

That said, I'll absolutely re-read this when I need that safe, cosy, no-thinky kinda read again. I'll probably also read the sequels. And I must catch the genuinely gorgeous hand-drawn animated movie again soon, to see how they compare! (My Letterboxd review makes me think they improved on it dramatically, to be honest? I have such a terrible memory that I can't remember the details even though I love it so!)

Oh, but... any sweet fire demons like Calcifer who need a safe home, if you're reading this, my fireplace is always open to you! 🔥 (OK, ok… I confess… I don't actually have a fireplace, but you're welcome to make one in my house!)
