Hear me out: This is Dungeon Crawler Carl for the fantasy girlies.
Both take ordinary people, drop them into an unfamiliar new world, and basically say: good luck! A huge part of the fun is watching Maggie figure out the rules as she goes and use her 21st century skills and knowledge to survive.
Like DCC, This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me has a video gamey premise. But instead of a multi-level RPG, it's a story-driven open world game with a medieval fantasy setting, political intrigue, and romance. Thereโs even a literal game mechanic at its core: every time Maggie dies, she respawns.
Is it nuanced? Fuck no. Though likeable, Maggie is a Mary Sue exposition bomb. Her enemies have the subtlety of Dr. Evil. Rellas seems to have recruited half its male population straight out of the CW. It's silly, tropey, pure escapist fantasy. But it is also really, really fun.
