  • have you ever "hate read" a book?

today i decided to read something that is def a hate read, for me, (ie knew i was going to hate it and choose to read it anyways.) i have never done this before but i have seen people talk about the concept for decades. i am mostly asking to make myself feel better about reading this cursed document. i am a chronic dnf-er so i don't read books i'm not liking often and when i do find myself not enjoying a text i stop... but on some level, with this particular text i just have/had to know how bad it actually was.

So, do you hate read? if so why? what's your process? is there a process? am i just morbidly masochistically curious? are we all morbidly masochistically curious? (for the record i am NOT asking which books you hate read as i do not wish for us to share actual hate i am simply asking about if/why we do this)

[before u look its not in my currently reading I'm using a placeholder cause i don't wanna disgrace my pagebound page like that]

Oh no! Your current PB username has been stolen somehow!

What would you pick as a second option (and why)? (Assume that all other potential usernames are available.)

  • Star Reviews

Hi! Recently while scrolling on here I saw a discussion about average star reviews and people trying to read more intentionally to boost their average star reviews and it just got me thinking. My average star review has pretty much always been 4+ because I know what I like to read and very rarely read anything below a 3 star and if I do, I usually DNF anyways. I am most definitely very liberal with my star ratings and a book doesn’t have to be life changing in my eyes to get a high review but I still don’t give a high review to just anything.

I guess my question is how do people end up with such low average ratings? What are your requirements for each star tier on a review? If you are very strict with your reviews, what makes you want to keep reading a ”bad” book?

Asking for Cozy Fantasy/Sci-fi/Queer books + manga recs for low mental health days

Does anyone have recommendations of gentle, uplifting/hopeful, cozy and sweet reads for days/weeks when you are struggling to read/do anything, and mental health has tanked? 🤣

I'm thinking along the lines of House in the Cerulean Sea, Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries, or like Laid Back Camp and Our Dining Table manga series.

I generally prefer to read books with characters in their late 20s or 30s, but it's not a hard rule at all, just more relatable to me, and I prefer not to be reading about angsty teens right now 🤣 no shade to the angsty teens, we love them and we all were them at some point! ❣️

Nothing with bullying/demeaning others in it please, even if its a small part of a bigger story, its a big trigger point!

Many thanks for any suggestions 😊

  • Funny Agatha Christie titles?

I don’t think this has been asked before as I searched first but I think I’ve developed a fondness for Agatha Christie. The very first book I read of hers was, of course, And Then There Were None, but I recently read The Murder at the Vicarage and found myself enjoying it even more. I adored the wit and humour in this book, which I found was largely (understandably) absent in the former, which had more of a gothic feel, I felt. Are there any Agatha Christie fans who have suggestions for any other works of hers that combine wit & humour with a good mystery?
