  • Give actual enemies to lovers recs please 😭

I am so sick of books masquerading as enemies-to-lovers just because it sells. I know these tropes are just a marketing tactic at this point, but are there books out there that actually keep it alive? For reference, I mean something like The Cruel Prince or even something as lighthearted as You Deserve Each Other. Please try to avoid books that are overtly spicy in nature. Thanks!

  • How many of the books you own have you read cover to cover?

I just added every single book I own (physical or audio) to PB and grouped them as finished, paused (which I'm taking as I got more than a few chapters in and didn't dnf but haven't gone back to yet), or tbr, and then did the math. only 54% of my library went into the "finished" category.

before I did this I estimated 65% read. my partner reckons when you own over 300 books, anything over 50% read is impressive, but idk ... I feel like that's a lot of neglected books!

how are your shelves measuring up, folks? or do you not even worry about this?

  • Deep sea/Subnautica inspired book recommendations?

Ok so I got recommended a Subnautica (had no idea what it was) playthrough video on yt and it was soooo cool šŸ˜Ž question here is, do y’all have any recs for books about deep sea creatures or the existence/exploration of many species that live at different sea levels?

I don’t mind fiction or non-fiction books!! As a kid I used to be so fascinated with the deep sea 🌊 I did get this bbc documentary book from a charity shop about different oceans and stuff so I might pick it up again but wondering about how known the deep sea genre is in general 🫣

  • What does underrated mean to you?

Inspired by a social post about "underrated books" that was just a list of popular or award winning books. What does underrated mean to you?

Is it just books that you haven't seen around much? Or do you take the time to actively search for people discussing that book? Do you only consider what's outside Tiktok underrated?

I find I see a lot of older books called underrated, even if they were very popular (and sometimes still are) at the time. But those books aren't talked about on Tiktok so does that make it underrated then? (To me, it doesn't.) It also annoys me how much algorithms shape our idea of what’s "rated" at all (though I'm VERY glad it's been encouraging more people to read). If a book isn’t fed to us through the algorithms, does it disappear from sight even if it’s well loved off those platforms?

I’m guess I'm curious if underrated needs or has qualifiers? Underrated by who and where? Underrated by mainstream readers, by awards, by sales, by algorithms? I know there's not really a correct answer here but that's why I'm asking for your takes!

Bonus question! What's an underrated book you love? When someone asks me for underrated books I go straight to indie authors (anyone else or is this just me?). A recent one I loved was the Clecanian series by Victoria Aveline!

  • Mood Reader struggles

I am a very indecisive mood reader. Now with the ā€œTBRā€ and ā€œInterestedā€ options I am constantly flip flopping between ā€œI want to read this nowā€ and ā€œI’m interested, just not right nowā€. I’ve changed my ā€œReadingā€ books several times within one day 🫠

How do ya’ll decide what you’re going to read? Do you have a rigid plan, like you have a list you stick to, or do you try a few books until one sticks? I tend to read the first few chapters of a book and if I don’t click with it I try another until I find one I can’t put down; but lately I’ve been getting 50% or more into a book and then out of nowhere i am no longer in the mood for it.

I recently read Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and it was such a good book but now I have choice paralysis because the books I’ve tried to pick up after it just aren’t hitting as hard and I’m stressing about falling into a reading slump.

  • What to read next

Just finished 'The will of the many' kinda want to start part two but doubting because then I'm going to have to wait longer on part 3 and maybe a bit too much two thick books after each other. My book club pick 'Dead girls don't talk' is also staring at me, but 7% in and I kinda feel done with it already. So could also just start an easy romance and/or smutty book. Kinda want to start something new before bed, but decisions...

  • Anyone interested in ā€œcountries of the worldā€ reading challenge?

Hi! I’m new to this app so idk if someone’s made this a quest or challenge already but a goal of mine is to read at least one book from a different country whenever I get the chance.

It’s such a good opportunity to explore different genres, writing styles and to achieve diversity in what I read 🫣

So far I’ve done these countries:

    • China: Wild Swans -> Jung Chang
    • Afghanistan: The Kite Runner -> Khaled Hosseini [Note: this is all I can think of right now + I do like starting afresh]

If you guys have any suggestions pls let me know i really want to expand my currently lonely collection of 2 countries lol šŸ˜›

  • anyone i can follow w similar interests?šŸ«¶šŸ¼

hi!! this is my first post in this lovely lovely community, so Imk if this type of post is not okay. i really want to follow some people, but most of the people i get recommended to follow read a lot of books from genres i don't particularly enjoy. so i wondered if i might have better luck w a community postā£ļø i don't think it's necessary to specify yet what i don't enjoy, as i don't wanna be negative, bc i can always be proven wrong😌 so here’s what i do like:

šŸ’ i really enjoy literary fiction, especially the russian classics. i also like norwegian literature (both classic and contemporary). i'm also VERY interested in reading more non-western classics and litfic in general. when it comes to Ā«easierĀ» reads (to me, at least), i love japanese and korean Ā«healing fictionĀ».

anyone who shares similar interests and read a lot of books within these categories?? would love to give u a followšŸ’—

    Thoughts from 40% (page 79)

Ok so I was scouring through my local library (cos I was waiting for something to print) and decided to check out their history section. Was very small and mostly military/british history based. But I found this book and thought to myself yeah this sounds pretty interesting let me give it a go…

    WHY?/+ve’s so far

    • wanna learn more about African history but not in a ā€œlet’s summarise the entire continentā€ way, this book is very region specific + educational
    • each chapter has it’s own author, very cool I don’t read much research based books like this
    • non-fiction reading is good for you! don’t be intimidated, find a writing style that you can understand and venture into the genre

    slight -ve’s

    • bro I know it’s educational but good grief these sentences are like mini graphs (I did history a-level too I know the struggle)
    • kinda had to read aloud to myself to understand certain sections but it’s helping to expand my vocab
    • you will need to search up vocab

CURRENTLY I THINK… quite interesting! I love books that help explain conflicts from a local point of view + the emic/etic leadership chapter was insightful.
