Rant/soapbox incoming:

It’s somewhat disheartening reading the prologue again in 2026. As someone in molecular biology and biotech, I’ve still seen much of the criticisms Crichton levies on contemporary research firsthand. Funding controls what can be pursued more than ever, and increasingly favors applied research to create new and profitable products, despite how reliant this is on previous basic research that produces a base of knowledge and understanding. GLP-1 only exists as a drug because of previous study of a rare desert lizard. mRNA vaccines were made possible by the collective body of research by molecular biologists, microbiologists, and immunologists. Yet instead of learning from these successes, both the government and investors have been abandoning basic research efforts. The miracles that could improve the lives of younger and coming generations are delayed farther and farther, for the sake of making short term profits for the already-wealthy.

I’m at the part where Alice reflects on the prospect of taking "alt-academia" jobs and how, although they are dignified professions, professors and academic elites see them as the easy route. This conflict between choosing comfort or prestige in your career feels very relatable irl. Sigh.
