  • Unreliable narrator

I've recently read a book that turned out to have an unreliable narrator and was reminded how much I love those. Do you? And please recommend some that you liked :)

Beautifully structured. The novel is centered around two main images/metaphors, and is sequenced logically using the structure of these two ideas. I love how the definitions provided more insight to our main character and her full picture. I wish we saw a bit more of Cassie and who she was apart from her bleak outlook on life, but the truth is when you are consumed by your black hole of depression, it truly does feel like there is nothing else that exists about you. And we did see snippets of her! Her fascination with black holes and news headlines leads me to believe that Cassie would have been happier as a researcher or scientist; the textbook style definitions that separate chapters play into this technical side of Cassie, and offer us more of an understanding of who she is on her terms.

  • Books you wish were taught in high school?

If you could be an opinionated teenager in your English class on Socratic seminar day, what book would you wish the discussion were about? Twilight? Perks of Being a Wallflower? Anything at all!

  • Chicanx/ Latinx book recs?

I'm looking to read more books written by Chicanx or Latinx authors. I would prefer if they were books not solely about the Chicanx/Latinx experience (hear me out). I am an educator and would love to bring in more titles that are diverse. I want my Hispanic students to be able to read a story from a Hispanic author that is not necessarily about the Chicanx/Latinx "experience" or generational trauma. I think it can be isolating as a student if your teacher only has books about what your "supposed experience" is supposed to look like, especially if it is a story of pain. What about the coming of age stories, the romance stories, the high fantasy, action packed stories? One example would be The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. The Earth is about to die, and our main character happens to escape and is tasked with sharing the last stories on Earth. Any cool stories come to mind?

What was your favorite book as a child?

Everyone has at least one favorite book from their childhood that they cherish forever, or that one book as a young reader that got you into reading into adulthood? What was yours? (I'll be adding them to my tbr, for real.) My favorite book as a young reader was A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and her Gemma Doyle Series. PS: I am loving reading everyone’s favorite books as a kid!!! Thank you all for sharing :)
