This is my first Tillie Walden book, and I can say I enjoyed it! The story has nice pacing and is easy to follow. The mundane plotline slowly deepens and gives way to a more whimsical set. The artwork is pretty, and the topics of sexuality, assault, and death are all treated with a lot of care and respect.

With that being said, I was left wanting more from it. For a visual experience, I found myself having some trouble focusing on the artwork. Most of the story is set inside a car at night; I believe the artwork wasn’t correctly translated into print. It doesn’t have enough contrast, and it most likely turned out way darker on paper. This made it difficult to appreciate Tillie’s beautiful art style and made it feel harder to connect to the characters.

Overall it was a nice experience, and I do want to read more from Tillie!

I’m so pleasantly surprised, I really liked it. It’s one of those books that I will probably reread in the future, I’m upset I didn’t get a physical copy… I might buy one anyway just so I can appreciate it further and annotate it.

Thought this would be a good introduction to Hemingway’s writing. I had no expectations and can appreciate it for what it’s trying to do. With that being said, I don’t think it lives up to the hype. It was just okay. I did like the meaning of the hills and the white elephant, but the conversation wasn’t all that puzzling.

It’s one of those stories that took me a while to get into but really touched me by the end of it. 🐇✨

I started with the audiobook, but I found it hard to follow so I switched to ebook halfway through. Definitely recommend reading it instead of listening to it!
