V is for Vampire But Not Necessarily For Vapid

I like my vampires like I like my lovers: melancholy, troubled by questions of meaning, and not necessarily romantic.

Nothing against the fun-campy-exciting vampire novels of the world, but this is a place for moral complexity, existential dread, and vampirism as a metaphor/lens to explore other ideas. I want vampire novels that make me think. Introspective vampires! The vampire as social commentary! Please suggest titles to add because I'm desperate for more!!

Hmmmm, Sunshine by Robin McKinley might be a good fit for this list? It’s been forever since I read it so I’m due for a reread for sure, but I remember it being much less campy and much more thoughtful than all the other urban fantasy that was being published at the same time.

Okay I'm a little over halfway through the audiobook and I'm not sure it's quite the vibe I'm going for with this list BUT I'm absolutely loving it so far! It reminds me of Pushing Daisies in a lot of ways and I'm having a great time. Thanks for recommending it!!

1

Agreed! Probably in my top 3 favorite vampire books of all time because it was such a breath of fresh air

3

One of my irl friends also recommended this one to me recently! Literally just checked out the audiobook on Libby 30 seconds ago so it's on deck for me to read :)

Complex vampires are the only kind I’m interested in!! The Vampire Chronicles are full of them — I’d add The Vampire Lestat as a good starting point. Also Night’s Edge by Liz Kerin, book one in a duology that is a really interesting modern take on vampires.

Nothing against a fun campy vampire but they just don't hit the same! One of my friends said she would loan me her copies of Interview with a Vampire and The Vanpire Lestat and I'm patiently waiting to get them from her. I've never heard of Night's Edge though, I'm excited to check it out!

Love a Vampire list! Suggesting - The Reformed Vampire Support Group, Certain Dark Things, Vampires of El Norte, Fevre Dream, Dead Collections, The Gilda Stories!

(Not necessarily all complex vampire characters but all dealing with complex vampire themes).

Omg thank you for these recs! So looking forward to checking them out!

Already obsessed with this list concept! I don't know if it would end up being the best fit for this list because I think it was more on the fun end of the spectrum than existential dread buuuuut you might be interested in Immortal Gifts by Katherine Villyard. It was way more introspective than I thought it would be and it was extra interesting to see how he navigated his vampirism with his Jewish religious customs!

I haven't heard of this book or author before but it sounds fascinating! I absolutely love when vampire books deal with how vampirism intersects and sometimes complicates other identities the characters hold.

  1. A Dowry of Blood, ST Gibson
  2. Carmilla, the OG vamp queen (who Hungerstone is a re-imagining of)
  3. Carmilla and Laura, a more direct retelling of Carmilla but very good

  1. Oh I forgot about A Dowry of Blood! It does fit the vibe. Adding it now :)
  2. I love Carmilla but left it off the list because its on every single other vampire list I can find... but maybe that's not fair of me to discriminate against it for being popular? It's genuinely a favorite of mine and does have the more serious and complex themes I'm looking for....
  3. Oooh placing a hold on this one right now. Thanks!!

Woman, Eating is soooo underrated I'm so glad to see it mentioned

If I'm being honest it's the inspiration behind the whole list. One of the best vampire books ever written for real.
