Ooh love this list! I have a somewhat unusual addition (though you don't have to add it of course): Ascendant by Michael R. Miller. In this book, cooking is essential to the way that dragons gather magic and the protagonist is a cook himself! The descriptions of the meals and the cooking are so elaborate, unlike any fantasy book I've read!

If you like this you should read and watch apothecary dairies.

Ooh I'll check it out, thanks for the rec! 😊

1

oooo!!! i’ve heard of Ascendant before but didn’t realize cooking was such an integral part of it!! it’s been added, and now i’m adding to my tbr bc dragons + cooking + magic sounds like my ideal type of novel!

2

Ooh I'm curious to see what you think! I've been screaming into the void in the book forum so far hahaha. It is a bit darker than some of the books here though, more high fantasy! But I found it really interesting how extensively the meals and the cooking was described and it really plays an important role in the series!

witch hat atelier mentioned!!! what a fantastic list as always, rags 🥹🥹

baking/cooking + magic always makes for the coziest and cutest reads ever! (side-eyeing the surprisingly dark Wizard’s Guide)

A lot of this list is on my planner for next year, and it popping up again makes me want to throw the planner to the wind. 😭😭

What a lovely list!! 👏

Not sure if it's quite up to the level you're looking for or not, but it comes to mind since I just finished reading them - both The Spellshop and the Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst (a series) have quite a focus on cooking. In the first, the protagonists make a jam shop to cover up that it's really a magic shop, so they forage for (and magically grow) fruit, and cook and sell jam as a major plot point. In the Enchanted Greenhouse, the love interest is constantly cooking for the protagonist, almost like food is a third main character.

thank you!! i’ve read The Spellshop, and it def is a bit on the line. i might think on it before i decide whether or not to add it, but thank you for reminding me that it could be a contender!!

2

No worries! Always hard to know exactly where that line falls!!
