i havent read queer books much beyond my sapphic books only 2020 which was limited to whatever libby ebooks i could find & then queer books i found thru bookstores etc so i literally got introduced to baihe due to going ‘hmm rui is reading a lot of danmei i wonder if there’s sapphic danmei.. i follow the signs to lesbian wherever they glow.. even by the achillean flag… i was also really intrigued bc thru your summer of swan-badge-wanting-induced katabasis i learned that a lot of danmei is not Like That which intrigued me.. because i hateee so many sapphic romances of the west 😭 i am acearospec and i am not here for whatever theyre doing because its BORING and ANNOYING and feels exactly like horrible straight romances with a gender swap sometimes. so i have hope that baihe will save me..? save me baihe…
oh god i haven't read many sapphic romances in english but that sounds horrible 😭 i feel like chinese romances in general are more 含蓄 / veiled/implicit(?) due to both cultural norms and censorship, which is perfect for me as another aroace hehe. hopefully these baihe novels will suit your taste too!!

there’s def good ones out there!! especially by poc… it was mostly the white authors that tended to disappoint me, but this is customary for any genre 💀 but yeah esp since before recently there wasnt that many sapphic books around (at least to my knowledge) it was just like… you accepted what u got and sometimes what you got was really really shitty. and now that queer books are marketable theres the added problem of ‘why was this even published theres no heart to it’
while i haven’t read a lot of chinese books and obv no baihe, i have watched a few c-dramas and i do really love the more..? quiet approach to romance if that makes sense. maybe subtle/gentle is a better word. like it not being this crazy fireworks all-consuming thing but letting it exist in their lives and find its place among everything else.

oof yeah... some of the books i've seen coming out recently are so absent of passion it's horrible. why are you even putting yourself through the process of writing a book if you don't care enough about it
yeah it makes sense!! that's definitely a popular romance trope, but i've definitely seen all-consuming love before, especially in xianxia. i think the part that works so well for me is that lust usually doesn't play as big a role as it does in english romance novels, so i get to see their relationship develop beyond that (though ofc sexual desire is very present lol)

oh yes fr but honestly in things like xianxia or fantasy in general i feel like i’m more forgiving.. its just like why would i wanna read about these boring peopoe’s modern love lives that has nothing else going on 💀 i would rather listening to my friends’ dating horror stories because OFC these books also dont give me a reason to gaf about these characters. give me a fanfic café au about a couple i have already fallen in love with over this!! (my metrics for characterization is honestly ‘would this be better if i inserted my d&d characters instead’ bc any good book i want the characters to be themselves.. if they’re more interesting as other people you’re doing it wrong.)
see i don’t even mind spice but it’s rarely done well esp recently bc of the pressures for every book to have some!! so just do away with it because i really don’t need it thank you
