Maybe a bit unknown for non-Dutch people but one of the best Dutch children's books (but also for adults!) is about a boy travelling a long distance to find a letter, and learns a lot about himself along the way. It's called The letter for the king by Tonke Dragt. Would recommend looking into it! It got a prize for the best children's book of the 20th century in the Netherlands:)
