A lot of books and memoirs say they'll have you laughing one minute and crying the next but this really delivers. Reading this you can hear Trevor saying every line, it feels truly authentic.
Trevor's life undoubtedly makes for hilarious and heartbreaking stories. What takes this memoir to the next level is his comedic, frank and poignant delivery.
His mum is a truly fascinating woman and clearly made both Trevor and this book something truly special.
As someone who knew very little about apartheid, only what I picked up over the years, reading this made me realise I really knew nothing at all about what it meant in practice, and the impacts it still has today.

"The hood made me realize that crime succeeds because crime does the one thing the government doesn't do: crime cares."
This whole paragraph/section is such an interesting but accurate perspective. I don't hear it very much, but it's true. I think the only thing besides crime that does the same things ("offers internahip programs and summer jobs and opportunities for advancement...") is sports, but you have to be good at them.
Has anyone else heard crime talked about from this perspective?

I love a woo woo moment as much as the next gal, and Elizabeth Gilbert's raw, vulnerable, public heart-ripping is nothing short of admirable and courageous. However, five pages in, I need the public to know l am:
