80 pages into this thing and I have no idea what the setting is. Is it dystopian with magic? Is this fantasy with semi-modern, post apocalyptic but also Roman Empire vibes? I couldn't tell you if my life depended on it.

Peak yearning. Poetic, beautiful prose. Bittersweet ending. Main character is basically Nicholas Cage in the National Treasure movies if he was young, french and hot. Need I say more? 5/5

I really, really like Holly Black's writing style when it comes to writing in Elfhame. Having said that, when the most exciting parts of your book are the ones where the protagonists of the previous trilogy show up, something is wrong with the current story.

Oak, our main character, did not convince me. I don't think the author knew what to do with him, what to make of him - she wanted to make him so many things that Oak ends up not feeling real, not in the way Jude and Cardan did in The Cruel Prince.

Wren, our other main character, feels rushed. I think the concept for her character is very strong, and her past provides a really solid foundation - and yet, we could have done a lot more with her story, especially at the end of the book.

Overall, nice writing, confusing characters, mid plot.

How can I know how a story ends and still have it punch me in the guts and make me ugly cry in fetal position? Suzanne Collins, the genius that you are.
