First book was a 4-star read for me, the second dropped to a 2-star. Tahereh Mafi, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, time to impress

We all, more or less, know what The Handmaid's Tale is about. If you think you can skip this book because of that, then you are very wrong. It's mandatory reading for everyone, but especially, for every woman.
This book is severe, and dark, but also softer than I anticipated in some ways. It's a first person narrative told through the eyes of an imperfect, and therefore, very human narrator. The writing is superb, poetic and relatable and with gut-punching declarations.
Having seen (part) of The Handmaid's Tale tv show, I'll say this book is different enough from the show to keep the reader on its toes. At the same time, it made me appreciate the show more too, and I think I might do a rewatch, and finally finish it.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding certain aspects, but I’m not sure where some of the hate for Nelly comes from. From my perspective, she’s just telling the story, and having normal human reactions to certain things. She is not (at least so far) a bad person like Heathcliff, so why am I seeing more hate for her than him?
