Did anyone else feel like some of Sciona’s selfishness and ego was a bit warranted. I don’t blame her for some of it. Being a woman in that society with the goals and ambitions she had. And knowing what befell the women who tried before her (especially the one who ended up in the institution). She needed the ego she did to accomplish so much and to keep herself safe in that leech of a society. I didn’t blame her for being so obsessive sometimes. Her fear of failure was so relatable, the stakes seemed so high. In the end I wish she could have lived a fuller life without so much of her ego and selfishness. It would have made her better mage if such a thing even exits. A mage’s job is evil, it seems like she was always doomed on the path she was on regardless of the contents of her character (if I think about this too hard I’ll go into an existential spiral). Still, I wish her ego didnt get in the way of her relationship with other women. Grappling with these thoughts is what made Sciona’s character, and the story, so great. Her actions were both deeply frustrating and very real.

Wow! I had no idea what to expect when reading this and I still don’t really know what to say. But I know this is required reading. Everyone can gain a lesson from this book. The main characters are everything! Sciona is layered and relatable, Thomil is honest and his raw feelings were articulated well, and Carra is the most unique character I’ve ever read. Truly an unforgettable story!
