How to Kill a Witch: The Patriarchy's Guide to Silencing Women

How to Kill a Witch: The Patriarchy's Guide to Silencing Women

Zoe Venditozzi & Claire Mitchell

Nothing brings people together like a common enemy, and witches were the greatest enemy of all. Scotland, 1563: Crops failed. People starved. And the Devil's influence was stronger than ever—at least, that's what everyone believed. If you were a woman living in Scotland during this turbulent time, there was a very good chance that you, or someone you knew, would be tried as a witch. During the chaos of the Reformation, violence against women was codified for the first time in the Witchcraft Act—a tool of theocratic control with one chilling to root out witches and rid the land of evil. What followed was a dark and misogynistic chapter in history that fanned the flames of witch hunts across the globe, including in the United States and beyond. In How to Kill a Witch, Zoe Venditozzi and Claire Mitchell, hosts of the popular Witches of Scotland podcast, unravel the grim yet absurdly bureaucratic process of identifying, accusing, trying, and executing women as witches. With sharp wit and keen feminist insight, they reveal the inner workings of a patriarchal system designed to weaponize fear and oppress women. This captivating (and often infuriating) account, which weaves a rich tapestry of trial transcripts, witness accounts, and the documents that set the legal grounds for the witch hunts, exposes how this violent period of history mirrors today's struggles for justice and equality. How to Kill a Witch is a powerful, darkly humorous reminder of the dangers of superstition, bias, and ignorance, and a warning to never forget the past… while raising the question of whether it could ever happen again.

Yet when she learns of Tamlin’s capture, Lark must choose whether to secure her future or risk it all to save the love of her life from his cannibal ex. -- MY THORNS FOR YOUR ROSES is a "Tam Lin" retelling written in the spirit of the Scottish faerie tale and folksong - for readers who enjoyed the fae in Heather Fawcett's EMILY WILDE series, retellings like Naomi Novik's SPINNING SILVER, and the complicated family dynamics of Kell Woods' AFTER THE FOREST and UPON A STARLIT TIDE. Trained to make them laugh—now, he must make them bleed. On the rising continent of Novra, old-world empires wage a brutal contest for control. Tazio, a Danuiin street performer whose only weapon is his wit, is caught in the currents. When the conqueror Lord Falkone razes his life to ash, Tazio burns with vengeance. But to kill a king, he must learn the way of shadows—a brutal path where deception is currency, loyalty is fragile, and power answers to sacrifice. Step into a world of political feuds, magic born from dreams and desire, and players who never reveal their full hand. As ancient forces clash, Tazio is pulled deeper into a game where every step closer to vengeance claws at the fabric of who he is, and who he loves. In a realm on the brink, Tazio must decide—will he remain the fool, or become the blade that topples Falkone... Why you might love Jester: A Dark Underdog Transformation: Follow Tazio’s evolution from a sharp-tongued performer to calculating shadow, driven by vengeance and shaped by obligation Immersive Political Fantasy: Explore the Realm of Galia: emerald towers, treacherous seas, bitter old-world feuds, and the ethereal force of Etria Love Forged in the Shadows: Fierce, haunting, forbidden. Passion that collides with duty and love that tests whether the heart can survive what the soul demands Complex Cast & Multiple POVs: A rotating lens on flawed characters, each navigating ambition, loyalty, and regret High-Stakes Magic with a Cost: Power born from dreams and desire—capable of miracles or devastation, never without consequence Perfect for fans of The Lies of Locke Lamora and The Name of the Wind, Jester is an epic fantasy tale of loss, loyalty, and the ultimate long game.

I didn't particularly enjoy this book, partially because the writing was very stilted and flat, but somehow still managed to drag on about details I didn't care about- but admittedly after part 1 I mentally checked out and skimmed through a lot of part 2 and 3, so it doesn't feel entirely fair to leave a rating either.
