I’ve always written more than I read. How selfish of me. I intend on atoning, one page at a time. I aspire to be a bibliophile like my friends Cas, Mindy, Neal, and April. 🇪🇬AR/🇺🇸EN

This is such a hard review to write because I feel like I could talk about this book for hours. I'll do my best to keep things short, though.

I'm not marking this as 5 stars for a couple reasons...

    1. 5 star reads for me, are books I want to read again and again. I do NOT want to read this again. Not because it's bad, but because it's brutal, and raw, and uncomfortable, and hurt me in a way I couldn't possibly describe.
    2. Because there were a lot of grammar things that kept distracting me. McCurdy is terrified of commas, it seems.

Despite these two things, this book is incredible. It will rip out your heart, infuriate you, and disgust you. As it is meant to do.

It is so raw and vulgar in its portrayal of teenage girlhood, the cycle of trauma, obsession vs love, the sneakiness of grooming, and the all encompassing addiction to trying to fill the void of our hearts with things we don't need.

McCurdy is able to get across so much in so few words. Her style is loud and bold in its simplicity. Every word feels like it was chosen with absolute deliberateness.

I think everyone should read this book, but when they do, go into it prepared to feel uncomfortable and gross and frustrated.

💭Discussion: Silly Reasons You’ve Read Books?

Page 7: “In college, I’d read Walden because a boy I found beautiful found the book beautiful. I understood nothing but highlighted everything.”

What’s your most embarrassing or silly reason for picking up a book?

For me, I started reading Rick Riordan’s The Lost Hero because it was the favorite book of a girl whose mind I found to be more beautiful than anything my eyes have ever seen.

    Spill yours. No judgment. imagetext

✍🏼 Poem using “Saccharine” (page 6)

    ✍🏼 Sweetness That Fractures

They offer her smiles that rhyme with cheer, sweet little lies wrapped tight in care, but pain can taste when love is fake, saccharine mercy is easy to break, and she turns away, still raw, still bare.
