There is something horrible about rating books, in general, and I'd love to have a discussion about that here, but that doesn't matter immediately.
I'm moreso interested on whether there are books you folks have read that you'd rate 1-3 stars, bad to mediocre, that however you think should be read by people by the conversations it starts, the values, the prose, or any reason at all.
For my part, I'm currently slogging through Samuel Delany's Stars in my Pocket, and while I think, so far, I won't rate it above a 3.5, this man prose's is so excessively rich, so abundant, gorgeous and turgid that people should go through the trouble of fighting his awful storytelling.

✨ How the most famous "monster" of Greek mythology ended up as just an "OK" retelling... ✨
It was a short, quick read with simple and accessible writing. Despite that, it was just "OK". I didn't see anything groundbreaking that made me go "wow".
Plot & World
I expected the book to focus exclusively on Medusa's perspective, but from the middle onwards, I felt it dealt way too much with Perseus's story. At the same time, the feminist vibes, while present, were very weak and remained completely in the background of the narrative. On the negative side, the ending felt somewhat anti-climactic to me, as I would have liked to see a bit more of the "aftermath"—like, for example, how Medusa's head ended up adorning Athena's shield.
Characters
The lack of character development was noticeable, and I expected a lot more, especially from Medusa's character. On the other hand, I really appreciated the approach to Perseus. In many modern mythological retellings, there is a tendency to portray men entirely as monsters to elevate the feminist element, which thankfully didn't happen here. Perseus wasn't an arrogant hero, but a young boy who wanted to save his mother and then let the world know Medusa's story, even if the epilogue showed that he ultimately remained just a man of his time.

A collection of the pilot books for popular series, for those of us who love to follow a character's journey for as long as an author will let us! Some of the below series have heavily debated starting points and book read orders--in those cases the pilot was selected based on what seems to be the most popular approach.
