I really appreciate so far the way Bree’s grief and loss (I know, she doesn’t like calling it a loss) are incorporated throughout this book and how they are handled. For a YA book especially to deal with such a topic, it’s important for young people to have these kinds of stories.
For a 16 year old whose mother passed away a few months ago, I think Bree’s portrayal is realistic. Bree navigating her grief and trying to understand her mother after such a sudden loss is one of the strongest elements of the book in my opinion.

Whether it's sci-fi or fantasy, you like a big series. You love when a book says 1 of 5/10/50+. Is the reading order of the series hotly debated? Is there a wiki chart to show how the books connect? Even better. Come spend some time in these worlds.
