The House in the Cerulean Sea did what I expected it to do - it was cozy and positive and light. it was also laying it on extremely thick and banging you over the head with its message, but the colourfulness of the children characters made up for it. yes, it was cheesy and predictable, but maybe because I went in with the right expectations, I vibed along with it. a great, fun and bright summer read.

I had an interesting experience with The Road to Tender Hearts because I'm not entirely sure why I didn't like it more than I did. it seemed to have everything I'm looking for - emotional depth, interesting and multifaceted characters, a silly setting. but somehow I just didn't fully connect.
it's a book that deals with extremely morbid and traumatic experiences through a lighthearted and slightly absurd narrative style and one comp that keeps resurfacing in my mind is The Simpsons x Up. I like the themes it chose to explore but I think the way it went about them was what held my emotional connection back. it touches upon so many important ideas but I wished we had delved deeper into them. at times it also leaned more toward telling than showing.
that being said, I don't think I've ever read a book with quite this writer's voice! highly recommend checking it out for yourselves, I can see this book becoming a favourite for many.
