I am in a word particular when it comes to anything to do with Classical myth and history. I first saw this book in my local Memphis book store, seeing first the striking cover and then that it was written by a native of my city. I took it as fate and brought it home. Zoccola delivered everything I wanted in this collection of poems, giving Helen a mortal body that she had not been allowed in Homerâs epic. The words read like twisting your fingers around the phone cord gabbing to your best friend about who you saw at the ACE hardware and what you thought about the 10 oâclock news. Juxtaposing the bloody fields outside Troy and the soybean fields along state roads, Helen is transliterated into a woman we have met before, not the obscure, distant face that launched 1000 ships.

It really is such a shame we won't ever get a screen adaptation of this book because Francis' country home is somewhere I would absolutely LOVE to see brought to life
