I am, putting it lightly, picky when it comes to Greek and Roman fiction written in the modern era. I’m always happy to suspend disbelief in the name of a good narrative, especially since the Homeric cycle is not so much history as it is mythological folklore. However, it’s necessary for the author to have an understanding of how people of the Classical age thought and acted, not making excuses for characters’ actions when they may be uncomfortable to the modern reader. I believe this book and Casati have that understanding, and I was able to enjoy a great perspective of one of my favorite characters from Greek tradition. In fact all of the main women Clytemnestra, Helen, Leda, Electra, etc are presented not as heroes or villains, but people with real-life, tangible emotions and experiences. The pacing towards the end was a bit disjointed, but overall, a solid read!
