this was fun to read, but at times kind of a drag because of the amount of pure info dumping. there’s a lot of names and character backgrounds that get introduced, but ultimately have little to no influence on the plot or main characters. i think too much time was put into giving every minor character a background, coming from Maggie’s memory, rather than actual world-building. having read a good amount of isekai webtoons, the plot of this story was also pretty predictable. sometimes it felt like the authors were stringing along small sub-plots that didn’t all have a strong influence on the main plot. i was still decently engaged though and interested in the sequel when it comes out.

I will be honest and say that this book took some huffing and puffing for me to get through it. It has fully lost me in the beginning, but I decided to push through, because the concept is something I would go feral for on paper. I am glad I did, because the last part was VERY good and I will be reading book 2 as well. However, I found some problems with the way it treats its female characters, as mostly one dimensional and always at risk of sexual violence. The amount of constant sexual violence in this book was kind of frustrating tbh, like do we NEED to have a girl raped every two chapters? It got kind of annoying. I liked Darrow's character arc, going from I will personally save everyone because I am better, to understanding strength in numbers and democracy. I think his main takeaway would be trusting people more. Anyways, it was a perplexing book sometimes, but everyone is saying how this series only gets better and I am down to give book 2 a try.

this is so hard to read. I can’t remember all these characters that are just being told to me by Maggie from her memory. It’s almost the same as reading the lineage lists at the beginning of a novel- you know the ones that lack context or plot, so are impossible to internalize! entire conversations can consist of her just reciting character backgrounds to another person who already knows the context lol.
