moacore commented on pearl_reads's review of Release Me (Shatter Me: The New Republic, #2)
This book had been one of my most anticipated books of 2026, and I'll say one thing: it disappointed me greatly. This CANNOT be the same woman who wrote Watch Me or This Woven Kingdom!
I had enjoyed some of the scenes we got with the OG characters, but even those felt unrealistic. So many of the characters didn't act like themselves, and it annoyed me to no end. Yes, the scenes and dialogues with them were fun, but I felt like they were all just filler. Empty with no purpose.
In the first book, I LOVED James and Rosa's dynamic. In fact, I gave that book 4.75 star rating, which I believe is the highest book I've rated from Taherah Mafi. In this book, however, James felt more lustful. Where is the yearning I loved?? It's literally NOWHERE to be seen. This is not even YA anymore. I related a little bit to Rosa, so I still do like her characters, but some of her actions annoyed me in this book. Don't even get me started on the tail (iykyk). Hopefully no one gets mad at me for this, but I believe Warner's chapters served nothing to the plot. Sure, the rare moments between him and Juliette were cute, and I enjoyed the few scenes between him and Adam, but other than that his POV was useless in my opinion. I would've preferred more chapters from Rosa instead of him.
The plot was non-existent, of course. I know plotting isn't Mafi's strong suit, but it hit an all time low, ngl. Nothing really happened, just everyone running around in circles. It frustrated me how this whole book could've been like a hundred or even two hundred pages less if they TALKED properly. I can't even say there is miscommunication because there is no communication. Everything was so repetitive and boring.
I'm going to be reading the next book because I'm too far in deep, and because I really hope Mafi can redeem the next book. Other than that, VERY low expectations for Escape Me.

Okok so is it just me or is the fandom exaggerating cardans cruelty Like he ripped off some girls wings, but outside the realm of messing with Jude I can’t remember anything else he’s done I don’t know, I just have a feeling that Jude is far crueler Cardan feels more of a stuck up rich kid than cruel. Not to say Cardan isn’t! Maybe it’s because he is bleak in comparison to Jude and her ruthless… For intstance I see posts that say, “we forget cardan is cruel” then the mention of the wing ripping ideal, but that’s about it? Like what else!!
I wish that side of him was expanded upon more, it would’ve been fun to explore… don’t get me wrong, I do love cardan! But I think we “forget” he is cruel because that wasn’t shown enough in the books to really account for much. It’s just fun when books show more than tell. Otherwise it feels more of an empty promise. Like what other horrid things did this tipsy, face of smudged coal eyeliner, prince do! Feed me holly black!

After all the amazing reviews I’ve heard, sadly for me so far it is not living up to the hype. I don’t want to dnf or pause it without going further, but at the same time I don’t want to use my time reading this at the moment, when I have other books that I might enjoy more, if it stays the same. Does it get better?

To the people who advertised the 1st book as a romantasy and that the FMCs are into an enemies to lovers dynamic with their own love interest, y'all are fucked in the head if you think that what the love interests did to the twins were an act of love/devotion. I have nothing but insane amount of irritation to everyone who mistagged this book (in particular) as a romantasy. Nothing—and I mean nothing— is romantic in this book. No, dry humping while under the influence of alcohol and kissing briefly IS NOT ROMANTIC.
I honestly think you need serious help if you find any of the scene is this book as romantic.

Half of this series is just Jude thinking about power, manipulation and strategy every five minutes 👑
I still don’t fully understand the hype sometimes… but somehow I keep reading because of Cardan 🩵
At this point:
“I stayed for Cardan.”

I'm pretty sure I looked so weird when I was walking my dog and started laughing my ass off to this scene 🤣
