"The first battle a magical girl must fight is the fight to save herself."
I have to say I am very biased with this book and I have a tendency to overanalyze things, so the things I'm going to talk about in this review are not at all treated with such depth in the novel.
Apparently, I've been kind of in a streak of reading books with at least a small jab at capitalism or about societal expectations, and as always, it's more than welcomed in this house. Four out of five. Eat the rich, kids!
I think this is a book very enjoyable, specially if maybe you are a magical girls fun, but also if you are neurodivergent or you feel like a secondary character in your own life, or if you feel like you are running out lf time and have an expiration date on your forehead.
Some stuff was predictable, at least to me, but you can only ask so much with such a short book.
Some interesting things I wrote on my notes that this book kinda graces (apart from the clear depression of the character, and please reread my note, this is touched very briefly and any depth is added by my own reflections): The idea that your abilities only feel real once validated by someone more “important” and that you need another person to make you whole, very subtle queer undertones, fate and destiny, what it means to be “nice and capable,” fighting the roles handed to you, being in vulnerable positions, and I'd say a bit of girlhood/womanhood.
I was also blessed with an author's note, where the writer dives a bit into the Magical Girl genre across the years, and gives an explanstion on how the idea for the book was conceived etc.

I've read a handful including Fun Home, Persepolis, and In the Dream House. What's your favorite? I love memoirs!

I'm really struggling with this (trying a second time after giving up on chapter one) but am going to try my best to stick it out this time.

I want to get into horror, have wanted to try it for a while now, BUT I can't read about sexual violence, it's a major trigger for me, and I'm always afraid that's what I'll find in horror books. Knowing that, do you think this quest would be a good fit for me? The queer aspect is a big bonus and that makes trying those horror books even more appealing.

Hi guys ,
I just finished watching Avatar The Last Airbender and I’ve been wanting to get recs on books that gives the vibes of the Avatar or the characters themselves e.g, Aang , Katara , Suki, Zuko , Mai , Sokka, Toph , Tai Lee , Azula , Iro etc etc.
Currently been reading the comics :)

I really want to get into more book series/trilogies, but I'm not sure if I should just pick one and binge read it, or alternate with other books/series.
What's your take on this? Please give me the pros and cons for each option so I can make an informed decision. 😁 Thanks!
