I have been trying to broaden my horizons and build a tolerance for frustration in reading (I tend to self-spoil when there is too much tension). What is a book you loved for the way a character was written? Bonus points if they felt real from the complexity and flaws they have.

Let’s talk about overused words…
The Oxford English Dictionary has over half a million words and yet the council of fantasy authors seem to have dedicated their lives to using approximately 37 of them... and it feels like that number drops to about 21 when we get to romantasy specifically. 😂😭
So, readers, what words need to go to Vocabulary Jail 🔒 for a little cooldown period? 😅
I know I mentioned fantasy authors (because I read a lot of fantasy), but I’m sure other genres are guilty of overusing perfectly good words until we can no longer hear them without rolling our eyes. 😆
Let's hear 'em! 📢
I’ll start: WHORL
Once upon a time, whorl felt whimsical. Magical. Atmospheric. Now, everything has whorls: light, paintings, floor tiles, evening gowns, back tattoos, mysterious artefacts... It's enough now. 😂
It's not an inherently bad word, but I yearn for some more creativity.
EDIT: Y'all are getting the most millennial response out of me for this post. 😆

after starting the year with Jessa Kane’s Moby: A Whale Shifter Romance and picking up a couple more of her books late last month, i have decided to challenge myself to read the author’s entire 82 book backlist and come up with my ranking of best to worst.
has anyone read through an author’s sizeable backlist in the past or is there an author where you would hope to read through their whole large catalogue?
(edited for spelling)

Who are the youtubers that you trust with your (book) LIVES. Anything they say about a book is gospel and their reviews are always on par? Or even do you have any recommendations for youtubers who talk about the plot of books…etc.
My answers to the above are cari can read, they are so entertaining and im relying HEAVILY on their ACOTAR forgot the plot series before the new books come out.

I've been thinking about this for quite some time and I'm really trying to bond more with others, but I've been having a bit of a hard time with it tbh. I'm a very reserved person in general and it takes me a while to really open up to others (and I'm anxious to post this but here I go lol).
so with this I'm trying to shout into the void for others to introduce themselves! I really want to make more friends on here and would love to get to know more of you and maybe some of you can find folks with the same interests too ❤️
what I especially would like to know about you 🫵:
📚what are your favourite books and why? 😺cats or dogs? (or neither?👀)
As for me, I'm jessie from germany and I'd say I read a broad range of genres, my favourite being fantasy! I'm currently getting into robin hobbs realm of the elderlings and am impatiently waiting for dead beat by leigh bardugo to come out. Also I'm trying to get more into horror, so I'd be happy if any of you had a suggestions for me! I have japanese gothic and the eyes are the best part available rn 👀
My favourite books of all time are probably the inheritance cycle aka eragon and the mediator by meg cabot, which are both most likely very based on nostalgia but I think about them regularly lol. I also really, really love anything miss bardugo writes, but I do love six of crows and ninth house the most 🐍🐇 AND!! honorable mention to the familiar which I liked a lot too!
Apart from books I'm an avid gaming, movie and tv series enjoyer! I love anything horror like resident evil, but here I enjoy many different genres. I most recently saw the new spider-man and obsession which were both absolutely breathtaking in different ways iykyk. Next week I'm going to go watch the new insidious movie!

Self control? Never heard of it. Seriously tho, I have such a bad problem with buying books. Sure there's worse things to be spending money on, but still damn. I'm still reading alot of books, but I'm making zero progress on my physical tbr because I'm just barely reading more than I'm buying. I need tips on what rules to set for myself and ones that actually work for my brain. I've tried limiting myself to only be able to buy one book if I read x amount of books that I already have, and it works but also doesn't. There's just so many books I want to read, and I feel like I need every single one of them. 😫 Also I'm conflicted about the argument that reading books and buying books are two separate hobbies. I deffinetly treat it like they are, but I feel like it should go hand in hand. I feel like the optimal situation would be to not buy any books until there's no physical tbr left, that way you can just go to the store and pick out your next read, and be able to start reading right away without the looming knowledge that there's however many books collecting dust on the shelf. I'm also mainly talking about buying new books, not dupes of a book that is already owned. To me the only reason to have more then one copy of a book would be to have second one that you can lend out to people, or if the one you already have has sentimental value and you want to preserve it. (Special editions are just cash grabs, and no one can convince me otherwise) Anyway, this was just a giant rambling thought 😗

A fantasy universe created by Sir Terry Pratchett, Discworld is a flat planet balanced on the backs of four elephants, which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle. These are comedic novels that parody traditional fantasy tropes. All books can be read as standalones.
