This book is reminding me a lot of Demon Copperhead with the child/teen narration, kids growing up too quick in volatile and unhealthy environments but with goodness at their core that gives you hope. You could somewhat say the same (but a little less so) with To Kill a Mockingbird. And all three are Pulitzer Prize winners… sensing a theme!

This book feels like something written for middle-aged divorced men

papermage commented on sashareads's review of Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert
I always find it harder to review a book I love than one I dislike, which is why this one has been such a challenge.
I listened to Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert as an audiobook, and while I’m sure it’s excellent in print, Bob the Drag Queen’s narration is absolutely phenomenal. The story is brought to life so vividly that I kept forgetting it wasn’t actually a blend of magical realism and memoir. At one point, I even tried to look up Dr. Slim before remembering, you know… that he isn’t real.😂
The book captures the emotional depth and complexity of Harriet Tubman in a way traditional historical accounts rarely do, and balances humor with heavy subject matter beautifully, never, in my opinion, diminishing the weight of the themes.
I simply can’t recommend this book enough.
