bit of an awkward stepchild of the series that’s more extended prologue than standalone story but it does well fitting in to the bigger picture with its beautiful writing that distracts you from the fact that you’ve only read 1.83 of a plot point in the last 100 pages
sashareads commented on daydreamday's review of The Plans I Have for You
This was unhinged from the first page to the last. I need to breathe for a second.
After a disorienting start, I was hooked by the unreliable characters manipulating their way through the story, leaving me suspicious of everyone involved, as well as by the compelling commentary on themes such as cancel culture, surveillance, and racism.
The pace was great and I liked the dual timeline, which created suspense and—since the two strands contradicted each other more than once—added an extra layer of paranoia that made me glad I wasn't reading at night. This book invites the reader to analyse, to conspire, and to interpret which I always appreciate.
In the end, I feel like Sanders went far into the toxic female rage-corner, but could've leaned further into the mystical, paranormal aspects of the story that were ominously present throughout the whole book and gave it a unique feel. The ending felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic but the ride was well worth it.
