And it was really nothing at the time, this contentment. It flowed through their open fingers like a stream, and they imagined it would always be like this, and that the stream would never dry up. It would just flow and flow and they would never have to think about where it came from. And never make the effort to scoop it up and drink it in, as if life could stay a honeymoon for ever.
We’re really starting off strong with this gorgeous passage and the reminder of the quiet truth so many relationships eventually run up against. It also feels like early foreshadowing for Wilbur and Maggie.
Some couples really do move through life with that effortless ease, but for most long‑term relationships, love is something you tend to. It’s choosing each other on the hard days, not just the easy ones. It’s compromise, patience, and remembering you’re a team even when one person can’t give as much as the other. I love that the book opens by nudging us to appreciate the small moments. To notice where our love comes from and to hold it with intention.🥹

I really appreciate Westover’s writing. She presents everything so matter-of-factly that the disturbing details come off even more alarming, because for everyone in it, it was the norm. The mountain setting feels beautiful and isolated at the same time, which made the chapter feel both captivating and unsettling.
One thing I’m already wondering is how much of Tara’s childhood she questioned while living it versus how much she only began to question later as an adult looking back.

It’s a happy surprise that Julia Whelan is narrating this book. 🥰
