thatswitchy commented on thatswitchy's review of Norwegian Wood
This book is well written, but everything else honestly ruined it for me. It reads like a manic pixie dream girl fantasy where the women never feel fully developed beyond their sexuality. Toru is also incredibly frustrating to follow. He’s passive, selfish, and seems emotionally detached from everyone around him, which makes it nearly impossible to connect with him or his relationships. And the biggest issue for me: the sexual content. It felt excessive and unnecessary, and at times crossed into straight-up disturbing territory. For example, there had to be a better way to explore Reiko’s struggles with her sexuality without having an extremely detailed sex scene between her (31 y/o) and a 13 y/o girl. There’s a line between using sex to explore character and just being gratuitous, and this book crossed it more than once. Overall, I get why people praise the writing and themes, but I found it uncomfortable, frustrating, and honestly gross.
