ace, ace, baby

Books about asexuality, be they non-fiction or novels. Everyone should read at least one asexual book from time to time.

Rep is usually the main character but sometimes side characters. 🏳️‍🌈

Anyone aware of any sex-favorable ace rep from the list or otherwise?

Aka I’ll count demisexual or ace-uninterested-in-sex-but-unopposed-to-it-or-participates-in-some-circumstances etc.

Been interested in exploring the nuance.

Preference for:

  • gay/m x m
  • M x masc or nonbinary/agender/etc
  • masc or nonbinary/agender/etc x ditto
  • gay or trans or t4t if none of the above

Do you mean sex-favorable? Because im actually not aware of any ace books/rep that are actually sex-negative and stay that way throughout the book. Sex-averse and sex-repulsed, though - yea. Though personally i come across more sex-favorable or at least sex-indifferent in romance fiction.

Oh my god, yes, you’re so right, Bahahaha! I didn’t catch myself making this switch of language even though I know this shit. Yes! Sex-favorable. I think my brain stole sex-positive because it sounds more aligned with what I’m looking for (even if it’s not the actual term definition) — characters who are not opposed to sex, and not sex repulsed, but not actively seeking it out or interested for themselves so much.

I know of a lot that meet the mlm/masc/enby request, but as i havent yet read them, i cant confirm their stance on participating in sex.

Of the ones i have read:

  • Little Distractions by KG Brightwell (mlm, demisexual sex-favorable with the guy he’s in love with. Fyi, this was originally a webnovel, so not the most polished technically, but i do recommend)
  • The Charm Offensive (mlm, demisexual - i paused this one, but it seems he becomes sex-favorable with his love interest)
  • Boyfriends by refrainbow (originally and is a currently ongoing webcomic, but is serialized and bound too, much like heartstopper. MxMxMxEnby poly relationship in which “goth”/Felix is sex-indifferent asexual, he likes making his partners feel good and he’s very flirtatious. But he himself doesnt actually get anything out of it directly. This arc is still in the works, but it was confirmed in a character FAQ and several other things throughout the years.

I’ll def stop back in this comment section as i confirm others!

You’re amazing. 🙇‍♂️ it’s an area I don’t often get (or expect) recs for and I appreciate them all. And you included details! Beautiful. ✨

Charm Offensive was recommended to me before, although it doesn’t sound like my topic it’s on my radar, but good to double note it applies for this ask!

And - oh! I’ve read Boyfriends, no wonder it sounds familiar. Maybe time for a reread, although it was a it too unserious for me if I remeber right.

I love list comment sections! I just dont think to pop in them often lol.

The first to come to mind is Last First Kiss by Julian Winters.

There seems to be (anecdotally) a large percentage of Ace Pagebounders so this feels like the perfect list for us!

1

Thanks so much!

3

Choir grrrl is a newly released book that has an ace character!!

1

Omg I love the cover! Adding now.

2

Unless I missed it, I didn’t see Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire on this list. It’s book one in a YA fantasy series. The main character of book one is ace. There is other representation also trans and queer representation. I found the plot really unique! It follows characters who each find a door into their perfect world (different for each of them) and then they accidentally came back to our world. The characters want to get back to the world they felt more at home in. They’re seen as crazy by their families and sent to a boarding school for kids like them. Each book follows a different character. I wish I’d found it as a kid because I definitely felt like I didn’t “belong”.

1

It is on there, very near the end of the list (9th from the end, but you have to hit the view more button a few times to get there). I really enjoyed the first few books in this novella series when it came out and one of these days I will make the time to do a reread/continue on, because there are so many books in the series now.

2

Oh sorry I missed it! I’ve read the first 3 and I think it’s such a cute series.

1

Oh no worries! There's lots to scroll.

3

As an asexual person who tries to read a lot of asexual books , may I recommend: The Meister of Decimen City by Brenna Raney (accidental evil villain releases rampaging dinosaurs)

Be the Sea by Clara Ward (Ocean voyage. Has asexual and demisexual rep as well as enby and just general queerness)

I enjoyed it but not sure I'd recommended it (deals with the struggles of being asexual and is pretty bleak and difficult to read): Portalmania by Debbie Urbanski

A Life in Too Many Margins by S.E. Thomson (disabled, trans writer writing about a disabled, trans character who is also revealed to be asexual)

1

Thanks so much, fellow ace! I've added all of these recs 💜
