This quote really stood out to me:

“Mom has a quote framed in our kitchen. It’s by Isadora Duncan “All my life I have struggled to make one authentic gesture…” Soon as I googled “authentic” I realized why mom liked the quote. Because mom struggles with ANYTHING real. All of you must exist to be real. Mom doesn’t want to admit that parts of her - - parts of me - - exist. I can’t play tennis AND make art. My sister can’t be good AND bad. I can’t be white AND black. I can’t have different kinds of friends and feelings.”

There’s some really great messages in this book amoungst the cute imagery and nostalgic summer camp antics.

Wow! It’s so real but heartbreaking seeing these memories back to back -of Leighton echoing her dad’s words at Dylan. The learned/internalized homophobia runs deep!

semi~spoiler: The repeated phrase from her dad was ‘You don’t want to be friends with girls like that.’ regarding queer behavior in kids who aren’t out :/
