"You understand what it means for one moment to pass into another and for the world in that quick transition to take on a new blue colour and weightlessness"
That just hits where it hurts, and sums it up perfectly.

As a big time anime nerd, I used to love watching AMVs on YouTube (living for the TikTok versions of that now 😂). Some songs just work really well for certain storylines and I loved watching the video collage perfectly line up with the beat and lyrics.
Sometimes I find myself making book trailer/music videos in my head to the songs based on certain scenes or events. What are song/book combos that you think make great cinematic moments?? Could be for the whole book or just a specific scene!
Here are some of mine!

Magical empires, far-flung galaxies, robotic dystopias, haunted academies—queerness belongs in every world.

To start with what I loved- the prose was fantastic. I loved the epistolary style of this book, complete with the main character scratching out words and stopping mid-sentence at times to hide her journal pages. The world building and general vibe was great as well. However, the horror aspect was pretty underwhelming for me. It was a pretty typical post-apocalyptic/cult type tale, with the same horrific things happening to female characters that normally do. I don't mind a bit of predictability in stories overall, but it does lessen the horror or unease when you can tell what is coming easily. The pacing was also a negative for me. The first 100 pages or so did not have much going on, and in a book this short, that is too long to spend just world building and going along. The second half of the book is MUCH stronger than the first though, so if you like or can deal with the last half, it's still a really great read.

I LOVED this. I read it all in one sitting, except for a short break to take a nap in the middle. I just kept going "well. One more chapter won't hurt." The first chapter threw me off. I felt a bit overwhelmed with who people were, why Chih could see the dead, and who the bird was. But as Rabbit reveals more of the story, I found myself, like Chih, understanding more and more. Nghi Vo did the final reveal perfectly- I understood at the same time as Chih. The prose was lovely; I felt my heart aching at several parts.
