Well, I've finished chapter 1 and so far I like it!
...I do, however, have thoughts about the German used 😅 Now before the English speaking hordes come to "educate" me: I know this is fantasy and therefore not that important, but still... if you're going to use an actual existing language for ambiance, maybe do it correctly, please? 😅
I understand the decision to use words that sound similar to the english equivalent, but the results are... mixed
glohwein (Glühwein): sure, I guess ü is annoying to type on an english keyboard
gilden (Gulden): probably translation issue from the english guilds? Technically Gilden does mean guilds, but as in merchant guilds, etc. But I suppose the similarity to "gilded" could also have been a factor for going with "gilden"
Komte and Komtessin (Graf & Gräfin) as count and countess: this is where things would really start to fall apart if it weren't a fantasy novel 😅 Once more, I get that this is closer to English! It's also just not a thing in German. Komte is just French with a k. Komtessin does not exist at all. There is the word Komtesse, but afaik it was only used for unmarried noble women of that rank.
Komte von Kirchstadtler... so, so close! Komte (Graf) von Kirchstadtl would be better though, as Kirchstadtler sounds like a last Name, meaning a person from Kirchstadtl. (You wouldn't say the Mayor of Londoner)
Prinzessin-Wahl. Sigh. Not quite sure how this happend, but it doesn't really mean anything (princess-election, princess-choice, princess-the-number-you-dialled). A princess-elector would be a "Kurfürstin" (but that once again contains the dreaded ü, I guess).
I am a fan of the Pfennigeist though, it sounds adorable 😂

I found this book randomly through the online library and put it on hold and waited. Only realized now that I borrowed the book that it is the second in a series. I have other books to finish first but will I be okay reading this out of order?

“Cassandra doesn’t notice the few curious onlookers wandering past the bookshop—or indeed, the much more furious one standing across the street like a particularly funereal pencil.”
I do enjoy the way this author digs at her second main character ☠️

Knowing how little of this is left is wild. Would be fascinating if ML Rio came back to this years later and wrote a longer novel out of it.
