Whatever Cameron's purpose in this story, I am kind of fed up with him. He does not take responsibility for his own actions and would rather scam someone rather than actually do something productive -like actually do the job instead of getting fired for not acting like the adult he supposed to be. He also blames his mother- and I get the trauma (go therapy, actually deal with it)-but it isn't his mother's fault that he won't take his jobs seriously and actually do what is needed to keep the job. He is smart, he could do something with it, but he *chooses* not to.

How religious is this book? I usually have no problem with fantasy books being inspired by real world religions, but this is extreme. The religious institution here feels like a copy of the catholic church (granted I don't really know how it operates IRL and it might be different, this is just my impression as an "outsider"), and the heavy use of biblical names and expressions like "his [wound] hurt like sin" don't help.

Just a warning to look up triggers for this one before going in because it is not a jolly good time for our characters. Domestic violence and animal cruelty are rife. (And why do i seem to be the only one who remembers the dog murder???)

The language of the White Saviour is not one of liberation or sisterhood: it is a language of imperialism. Nothing gives away a White Saviour Complex like white women rallying to ‘save’ brown women despite the gruesome history of what ‘saving’ has entailed. White women have to free themselves from the lingering notion that white supremacy has socialised them into—that they know what is best for non-white women and their job is to save us from ourselves. This must occur before they can even begin to think about their membership in a sisterhood that is capable of freeing all women from patriarchy.

are not the two cops around the same age?? Why is no one talking about how weird it is that he is dating her mother?
