The end (the last 30% or so) REALLY pulled through. I went from being very neutral about this book to enjoying it a LOT

i love the concept of this. eating books, describing what they taste like, having it affect your personality, giving you knowledge, some people needing to feed on human minds instead. it's incredibly cool and well-done.
and the politics of it all! the different marriages and their whole culture was so interesting. the whole communion thing and the minds living on like yess i love that. i didn't really get why the mothers are never allowed to see the children again but maybe it was just misogyny. reading devon's feelings after giving birth was soo heartbreaking. men are the worst as always!!
i really liked devon and cai. she cares so much for him it makes me cryyy. i too care immensely about cai. imagining that five year old talking like an adult is wild and i Love it. i of course am also obsessed with devon being a lesbian <3 didn't care super much for the specific sapphic romance but i'm happy sapphic romance was included, yk
the mind eating process is soo eerie when cai is described doing it. likee the long tongue?? no thank youuuu!!
im SO sad that there isn't a sequel, i need to know that she actually goes looking đ„č (vague to avoid spoilers ofc)

such a good book! i really liked the world and the magic system, and i thought most of the characters were interesting. there were a lot of povs but i feel like it made the world feel more real and helped me understand all the different politics. i had no idea what was going on sometimes but that just made me want to read more. canât wait to read the rest of the series!
