I’m really enjoying a flawed, violent lady protagonist these days. Also wolves are badass.
This book deserves more thought and eloquence but I don’t have it right now.

Much like the MC Grace, I have trouble identifying what will bring me most happiness. I like to pick up a historical romance every now and again because I know exactly what I’m getting, or at least I think I do. This one didn’t work for me, but I imagine if you’re familiar with the side characters (since this is apparently the first in a spinoff series) it would work out better. I do give props to the Heath for creative use of libations—I hadn’t read that before.

Sadie immediately sounds like someone I would have wanted to hang out with as a kid, tiny goth girl!!
Sadie had on a burgundy hat with a black ruffle. It was about the size of a cupcake. It was propped on her head uselessly. But at least it didn’t take away from the impression her black velvet coat with burgundy buttons made. She had small black shoes with black bows on the toes.

I flew through this audiobook. I got caught up in it right away, and honestly it didn’t slow too much for me even in the middle. I really enjoyed the character dynamics… these people have been through some real shit and it deeply impacts how they interact with each other. Things get dark, so check your content warnings. Lord was a bit heavy handed with the foreshadowing imo, but the world building was pretty cool, and the plot had layers. I enjoyed and will pick up the sequel for sure.

One of my favorite end-of-year activities with students is a passion speech. They choose something they love and spend time convincing the rest of us to love it too. But before that, I have them do a “rant” activity.
No grammar rules. No structure. Just pure chaos. They can complain about anything they can’t stand.
This year’s rants thus far have included some great topics: Caillou, Wapol from One Piece, and, one of my personal favorites to bring here, Hatchet.
The student said, “If I had to read another line about that dude staring at the lake or eating berries, I was going to buy a hatchet just to throw it at the book.”
I always end up in tears by the time I finish reading all of their pieces. But, now I need to know, what book would you stand on a hill and scream about at the top of your lungs?? Or if you just want to rant about something, what would it be??

Women are everything in this book: cunning and sweet and intelligent and naive and manipulative and so so angry. Plus we get awesome nonbinary rep (I 💜 George). I had my theories about certain things along the way, and even in the instances I was correct, the reveal was often not what I expected. I’m almost wiped out from the drama of it all but I do recommend this twisty, multilayered story of women’s rights and wrongs. Definitely check out the content warnings before reading!
