Being familiar with the author's other translated work, 'Confessions', I had high expectations for this book before reading it. The premise was interesting, and I thought it raised an interesting question around guilt and grief, especially when it involves children. I also liked reading the different POVs of all the involved characters, as it highlighted how the different characters dealt with the incident and how who they are as people and their surroundings affected this. However, I think something about the pacing of the plot does this book a disservice; the first two chapters are very heavy and a lot to process at first. Similarly its hard to see where the story is going at times, which was a bit off-putting. I also felt like some smaller things didn't quite add up. In the end, I think Penance just does not pack that punch Confessions did. It has its moments, and I enjoyed the writing style, but it doesn't have the same impact. Nevertheless, it was an entertaining read, and I hope more of Kanae Minato's work is translated, as I would love to read it.
