No Kids Allowed
Romance reads across genres with childfree characters/storylines. This shows up in different ways. Its either a given, not a part of the plot or a conclusion. That said, it doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any child characters in the story. If you need details I'll dig into my memory to verify. I'm open to recs, but I want to be really clear about the nature of their childfree status, so any explanation you can provide would be great.

Fantastic idea for a list! So many people these days don't want kids, yet fiction throws it down our necks constantly as the default ending for romance stories!
Yes! I do like a realistic balance in my stories. HEA’s don’t necessarily need to be child-centric to be happy

Some things to note:
The Kraken's Sacrifice has a pregnancy and termination.
Pleasure Crew Avery has a character that was made infertile against their will (not by the MMC but the bad guys they rescue her from)
Whispers of the Deep and Deep Water series by Emma Hamm-though the author put a scene of the FMC being pregnant in a mystical vision of the potential futures she has admitted that for personal reasons she avoids writing pregnancy or children in her stories. Which besides that one vision scene is reflected in their works

Same! I never planned to have kids myself but ended up adopting my nieces. I am happy with that but I also would have been happy to just be the fun aunt too. HEA comes in many flavors 🥰

Book Lovers by Emily Henry could fit for this list. While there are children in the story (in the role of the FMC's nieces) both the FMC and the MMC state that they don't want children of their own and it played a role in why one of them split from an ex.

This is an awesome list!! All of Marie Mackay’s books fit 💕 From her website: “I maintain a commitment not to write pregnancy in my books (including epilogues). While I have nothing against sweet lil babies, my leading ladies find HEAs outside of children <3” So far I’ve read Shattered Omega, Psycho Alphas, and Havoc Killed Her Alpha. Zero babies. *if you’re taking suggestions
Oh you know I didn’t put that together for this author but now that you mention it the ones I’ve read from them were all childfree. Which is not common in omegaverse so good recs thank you!

Totally agree! I wish we saw more of that. Sometimes it feels like the pregnancy trope just gets thrown into the epilogue for the sake of it, even though the characters never talked about wanting kids before 😞
Yes! I’m fine with a kid or pregnancy epilogue if it makes sense for the characters and story but I think some authors do it because it’s expected. I am glad to see more and more authors making endings and epilogues without when it matches the characters and story
