This is a list of classics written by authors who are not Straight, Cis, White, and Men as the title suggests. I've seen so many people say they don't read classics as they aren't diverse, and I wanted to give some suggestions that are.
I will put a list of the books, their genre, and why they were added in case anyone is looking to diversify their reading in a certain way (e.g., wanting to focus on books by queer poc).
Suggestions are more than welcome!

Yess! A list I didnât realize I was missing in my life

Yay I hope you find some good books from it!
List of books, genre, and why they were added
Note, I am going by what a quick search tells me they identify, and if I make any mistakes or miss anything, I apologize, and let me know. This list exists so people can see why these books were added and make choices to further diversify their reading. I also added genre so you can pick books the align with your tastes as the term "classics" is very broad.
⢠Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin - Literary Fiction - Black queer man ⢠Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler - Sci-Fi Dystopian - Black woman
(rest to be added tonight and tommorrow)
What a great and wonderful list!!!
A few that came to mind for me: +Federico GarcĂa Lorca â gay playwright and poet who was active as part of the Generation of â27 in Spain, later assassinated by the nationalist forces at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War (debated on whether itâs because he was gay, a socialist, or some other unrelated motive). Heâs famous for his poetry collection âRomancero gitanoâ as well as his plays! Thereâs an entry on here called âThe House of Bernarda Alba and Other Playsâ that could work for this list, maybe?
+Emilia Pardo BazĂĄn â Spanish author whose work featured naturalist and feminist themes. One of her famous novels is âThe House of Ulloaâ
+Carmen Laforet â Known for her novel âNadaâ, which is about the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War
+Ana MarĂa Matute â Spanish author who wrote as part of the âhijos de la guerraâ (children of the war), a generation of authors who grew up under the Francoist regime after the culmination of the Spanish Civil War. Her novel âThe Islandâ is one of her more famous works!
+Isabel Allende â Chilean author whose works like âThe House of Spiritsâ are considered modern classics in magic realism!
+Manuel Puig â Queer author and activist from Argentina, famous for his novel âThe Kiss of the Spider Womanâ which covers themes of queer identities and political liberation under the backdrop of the military junta / dictatorial regime in Argentina
+Angela Carter â Iâm not sure if her works are considered âclassicsâ or not, who is to say what the arbiter of that would be, but she wrote a collection of gothic fairy tales with feminist undertones called âThe Bloody Chamber and Other Storiesâ !!

Thank you these are amazing suggestions!
This is such a fantastic list, thank you for putting it together!!!!

Thank you I hope you find some good reads from it!
I might suggest something by Willa Cather! She was white but she was a queer woman and I think her depiction of women and the immigrant experience on the American frontier is super interesting in O Pioneers and My Antonia.

Thank you I added My Antonia!
If anyone want to do a buddy read for any of these (later this month or in may) let me know
wonderful wonderful list
