I was so confused with this book however, towards the end of it, the puzzle pieces were starting to come together. I was a bit slower when I was reading the final pages and when I got on this app, it helps me realize what was actually going on. This book is definitely confusing and may need a reread for me to fully understand what is going on but overall I think this was a really good poetic read

"If there were two paths to a destination, he picked the longer and more arduous one." Hmmmm no couldn't be me 😐 He probably would walk downstairs for every single dish on its own, while I have the approach: How much can I carry before I become a danger to myself and others? Not because I want to carry much, mind you, but to avoid making the way several times. ☝🏻

So, the chapter discussed, I'd say, the shift from conservatism to radical conservatism (dare I say, fascism) within the Republican Party and why that shouldn't be surprising, though some conservatives still wonder about what happened to their party; it was always there, but kept away from the governing levels of the party. Looking at concepts like tolerance paradox, and also the Agenda-Setting Theory (refers to if media covers a lot of right-wing stuff, it gets normalised and more salient - no matter if the content reported is good or bad), it's easy to explain (these are my thoughts).
To break the chapter down: Republicans always used people from more extreme groups to further their goals, and of course, conservatism in its root is a slippery slope, especially considering who was allowed to vote for the longest time of the "oldest Democracy in the world".

Since a lot of my regular contacts on here (probably) won't ever be able to read the book, I thought I'd give you a quick rundown of the chapters after I read them (if I understood them fully). But I don't know, maybe no one's interested in that, then I will stop 😅 But I'd love to hear other people's thoughts, especially from people living in the USA.
The first chapter was more an introduction of the general topic, as the book wants to outline how the radical right took control over the Republic Party - by the way, as a German, the essentially two-party system has always sounded wild. If you'd put the Democrats over our party system, they would span over 5ish (depends on which you count) parties, ranging from very conservative to very left-wing. Anyway, got distracted, so the first chapter starts with a brief recap of the realignment and the differences between Democrats and Republicans mostly before said realignment.
