  • Small font size and spacing

Sometimes, the font and spacing of a book really affects my focus. I would be enjoying a book but the tiny words will throw me off. Does that happen to you?

  • DNF’ing a popular book that everyone else seemed to love.

How do you guys cope with adding a 4.5+ star rating book to your dnf shelf, a book that you ONLY heard good things about?

I had to dnf six of crows last month because I was not enjoying it at all and it is still bothering me a lot. It makes me sad whenever I see the pink DNF highlight over it. I just feel like I’m missing out on so much, but at the same time I know that I cannot force myself to like a story that I did not like.

I don’t know if I should give it another go? but then that would be forcing myself to read it just because I can’t accept the fact that I’m like.. a part of the 0.5% that didn’t like the story 😩

How do you guys deal with this?? 🥲

  • Author Easter eggs

So obviously we all know certain authors/creators like to hide references/easter eggs in their works.. but I’ve always wondered what they do when no one notices? Some things tend to be so niche and not every author has millions of fans to do Taylor Swift-esque hunting. I’ve always known if I were to write a book I’d make a list of all the hidden secrets I put in it, so people can see the hard work. What are your thoughts? Would you want everyone to know? Or would you let the readers figure it out, even if it means nobody ever does? And what books/pieces of art, music, film etc have you seen ‘Easter eggs’ in. I’m a sucker for ‘crossover episodes’ in books, like Jacks in Caraval or the callbacks in Steven King.

  • Obscure books?

This post is sort of.. twofold!! Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I haven't seen this pop up recently so I hope it's fine.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever picked up a book from a used book store and then been unable to find the next book in the series, or even another copy of the same book? Or, unable to find the other books by the author? If so, what book was it, what's your story about that?!

The next question is... how do you find obscure books? Thriftbooks was a bust... ebay has suuuper expensive shipping... do i just hope and send good vibes and manifest the book appearing?

So let me explain my story. I love used book stores and when we go camping/on roadtrips my family likes to stop at any we find on the way. Well I found my favourite... a mass market paperback fantasy from the 80s. It was called Songs from the Seashell Archives (banger title) and it was the first volume (if you follow me you might've seen me update a review) hehe. I love it. It's not the greatest book of all time but it was the perfect book to read in the summer. Well I wanted volume 2 and i'm like well i'm not gonna find this book anywhere, not the volumes (they combined books 1-2, etc). I ordered it on thriftbooks... just to get a 🤷🏻‍♀️ heres your money back bc we don't have that book On ebay its being sold for like... $8 which is fine except the shipping is +$20!!! I'm kind of getting obsessed now so I checked thriftbooks again and it's listed. So friends.... should I try to order on thriftbooks again? Should i let it be and search for this book in used book stores for the rest of my life?

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

I just don't know what to say about this one. I laughed some, I cried even more, but through it all I didn't want to put it down.

I am typically a romance reader. It's seldom I'll read something else. This was not a romance in the traditional sense, but it was most definitely a love story. And it was a heart breaking love story. I fell in love with Nora. She's strong and vulnerable all at the same time. The men in her life, Soren, Wes and Zach, were all loved by Nora and all love her in a different way in return.

I will definitely be reading the rest of this series. I hope we haven't seen the last of Wes or Zach.

  • Question for the Obsessive-Inclined

Hi, boundlings. I guess this is similar to a reading slump, but the opposite...?

Recently, I read a book and loved it so thoroughly (as I'm sure most of us will understand). I don't normally listen to audio books but I enjoyed reading this so much and I wanted more of it, so I downloaded that as well. I instantly went out, and searched for the hard cover. For the past weeks, I haven't been able to pick up something new. I have a physical tbr shelf with titles I'm genuinely excited for. However, I find myself constantly going back to the audio book or flipping through the pages of my favorite parts, and am just unable to get invested in new characters.

Do you fully lean into this? This is a part of me now, other books be damned.

The book itself isn't revolutionary by any means. It's not ground breaking and can be corny and has many flaws... but once I finished it, I didn't want to put it down and just move on to a new story and characters.

How long does it take you to want to be interested in something else? I usually like to give myself a couple of days and sit with my thoughts before my next read, but its been ages now. I know I want to read something new, its just not sticking.

If you read this far, drop your favorite fandoms so I can drown in something new.

  • Queer youth books

I had a discussion with my librarian colleague today after putting up the Pride book display in the school library. It seems we are lacking in certain aspects of our representation. Specifically, we're missing stories that:

    • feature child or youth non binary and trans characters
    • have happy stories about being queer (for some reason, there's always focus on the problematic and painful sides of being queer/gay/ lesbian)
    • LGBT+ picture books for younger readers in general

The stories need to be appropriate for someone 16 years or younger. We're in Norway, but our kids also read English, and books are often translated into Norwegian (especially if they become well-known).

I know we have great rep and LGBT-friendly readership on PB. I wanted to ask if anyone has any book suggestions so our school can be even better at queer representation than we already are? 😃🏳️‍🌈❤️

  • Create a university course for one book of your choice!

Simple, fun, and creative activity I'd love to hear from others. 👀🖋

Basically my questions goes did you ever read a book where you wished there was a course offering it so you have an excuse to STUDY and ANALYSE the shit out of it?

What would be the overall aim and theme of that university course? Any required readings?

Like not just annotation or marking some passages. The vibe is "I need to grab a notebook to write down some facts and opinion, open Google and download some articles that talk about what I'm just reading". 🤓😅

Mine is "An In-Depth Breakdown of Xi You Ji: Journey to the West"

I'm reading the Anthony Yu translations and my notebook is over 3/4 full of all my notes on the 1st Vol of JTTW (mostly writing down what's on the footnotes). I've also scouted some articles and journals online that talk about specific Chinese mythological elements as my rabbit hole. 🤭

I'm not sure what my aim would be in that course, but it's def an introduction and expansion on Chinese mythology, culture & history (from the early dynasties all the way to the Han dynasty), philosophies such as Daoism + Buddhism + Confucianism, and comparing its modern adaptations (anime, live action, Hollywood, etc.). This course might def need to be split into Part 1 & 2, I don't think all these topics can be covered in one semester lmaooo.

Have fun, be creative and nerdy!!

  • Phrases/words you can’t stand?

Vent post about something relatively inconsequential!

I am reading Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert right now and Bob the Drag Queen has used the phrase “if I’m being honest” at least 3 times in the first hour of listening. I am starting to despise this phrase, mainly because it seems to add nothing to 90% of the sentences it’s used in. There are a couple other authors I’ve read who use it a lot and I’m getting annoyed just thinking about it!

What turns of phrase or words make you cringe when you read them?
