new project -- reading around the world!

I follow this creator on instagram, Steven J. Reese, who is currently reading a book set in each of the 50 U.S. states. I love this project and have been really inspired by it. Personally, I've been trying to expand the scope of what books I read, particularly trying to read from different parts of the world (shoutout to women in translation!) I majored in English in college and the texts we read were largely from the States or Europe, particularly Britain. I've recently read a few books by Korean authors, Tender is the Flesh (Argentinian), amongst others. To keep track of my progress I'm thinking of both creating a few lists on Pagebound and also getting a physical map to check off the places where I've 'read from.' If you have any recommendations or want to follow along let me know!

  • Books like The West Passage and The Spear Cuts Through Water

I really liked how both of these were written and haven't been able to find anything like it again. I specifically liked the dreamlike quality of both, the long journey, and the LGBTQ normative settings.

  • Gratitude Thread: Shout Out a Book That Got You Through a Tough Time

Books have been my anchor for many years, and 'Man's Search for Meaning' by Viktor Frankl helped me find purpose during a rough patch. 😣 I'll forever be thankful for it. What's a read you're grateful for, and how did it impact you?

  • books with an MC dealing with grief?

Hi! Unfortunately the fall and winter are just hard for me due to losses I have to live with, and I’m hoping to read some books where the characters are going through the same. It has helped me in the past :) I’m also looking to explore more genres but if you got romance with a grief subplot I’d love to hear it too!!

  • dystopian novels you can't recommend enough?

I want to read some dystopian fiction, so give me your recommendations, please. I've already read The Hunger Games and its prequels, 1984, and Brave New World, and I have The Handmaid's Tale, though I haven't read it yet, haha. So please recommend me more dystopian novels, especially those that aren't as well-known but that you believe are 5-star books.

  • It's Not You, It's Me

Does anyone else feel like they're a way harsher critic when listening to audiobooks vs reading physical copies? Not that I'm picking them apart more, but that I know I would've been way more invested if I'd been reading instead of listening. There are some audiobooks that grab me and I don't want to do anything else, but I feel like those are rare. I just get bummed out sometimes when I finish listening to a book I'd been looking forward to for so long and I'm just like "meh," when I know I probably would've liked the book so much more if I'd been reading a physical copy.

This just happened to me with The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. Alllll the 5 star reviews and I felt like it was cute but I never fell head over heels with it. My sub-par listening skills are probably to blame..I'm having audiobook regret and wondering if that's a thing other people experience too.😬
