i loooooved this book! i read it after watching the show because i didn’t know about it before, so i had an idea about what the story was like. but it was so much more! as a jane austen fierce reader i almost know pride and prejudice by heart, so to me the first half of this book was a bit repetitive because it goes over the events of that book but from a different perspective. it means it’s a bit slow, but it didn’t bother me that much because the perspective was fresh and it was interesting to read what mary might have thought during those canonical events (like lizzy’s marriage to darcy, or her refusal of mr collins). nevertheless if you’re familiar with p&p keep in mind that the first half will be all too familiar.
aside from that i thought the book was really good! i enjoyed mary’s thoughts and how she processes them, and jane austen’s introspection is very much present in this! i also adored the love interest and i wished they’d had more time together, but even if they didn’t their story was lovely, and i am now obsessed with tom hayward!
i really recommend it! i had so much fun reading it!
