As a child I was taught that Israel came to be due to WWII and the horrific antisemitism that happened during that time. To learn that Zionism and the impending murder of the native Arabs that lived on the land that they were already planning on colonizing first reared it's ugly head back in the 1870s is shocking and disgusting. Herzls' diary entry from 1895 is damning.
On the other hand, I'm completely unshocked to see Britian at the scene of the crime.

I've seen Road of Bones (and the rest of The Ashen series) getting really popular online lately and I loved it! It's actually what got me into Romantasy in the first place, and I think it's a great pick. Books 1, 2, and 2.5 (novella) are out now, and book 3 is coming in February 2026.
TROPES:
SYNOPSIS: A woman on the run. A crew of Viking mercenaries. A forbidden romance. And the secret which threatens them all.
Silla Nordvig is running for her life.
The queen of Íseldur has sent warriors to bring Silla to Sunnavík, where death awaits her. When her father is killed, his last words set Silla on a perilous quest: travel the treacherous Road of Bones–a thousand-mile stretch haunted by warbands, creatures of darkness, and a mysterious murderer–and go to Kopa, where a shield-house awaits her.
After barely surviving the first stretch of road, a desperate Silla sneaks into a supply wagon belonging to the notorious Bloodaxe Crew. To make it to Kopa, she must win over Axe Eyes, the brooding leader of the Crew, while avoiding the Wolf, his distractingly handsome right-hand man. But the queen’s ruthless assassin has other plans and hunts Silla obsessively.
Will Silla make it safely to Kopa? Or will she fall prey to the perils of the Road of Bones?

How do you guys choose what to put in the Your Taste section?
I've kind of gone for all-time favourites before, now I'm thinking of making it more recent favourites, nut I'm weirdly indecisive on it. Do you guys try to reflect different genres you like? Let's chat.

I’m going to a Stephanie Garber signing tomorrow and I’m so excited! I’ve also met V.E. Schwab, Jennifer Saint, and Cassandra Clare! What authors have you been to signings or lectures for?

I loved this book, but it also had me furious most of the time. I definitely loved it for the message Wang was trying to convey and not the characters, so much. One of the main characters is infuriating and the story is mostly told through her POV. The other main character is loveable, but we get so few chapters from that POV. What makes the read compelling is the direct correlation to American and other colonial societies. Definitely for fans of Babel, but I do think the writing is more accessible than Babel. I will be very excited to pick up other works from M.L. Wang & will be telling everyone to read this!

I was trying to recommend this book to someone who didn't like slow books and it was like, how do I articulate that the slowness is what makes it so beautiful? That these stories which weave together make the frame narrative so much stronger. Their loss I guess 🤷🏻♀️

Sciona, Alba, Bringham, Aunt Winny, and Tommy are definitely my favorite characters so far!
I’m really enjoying this book. The dynamics are great, and I love Sciona’s character for always standing up for herself. Even though she still has doubts here and there, she always manages to overcome them. It gives me such a hopeful feeling in this world that was made for men.
