I think it's tragic how Marcos is able to act the most human only when he is surrounded by animals.

This chapter has been the most disturbing so far. I keep on forgetting that the book is set on the future, with video calls, projected images, and automated systems. The cannibalism part makes me think that this world has gone backwards and I am always surprised with the advanced technology. But then we meet Marissa and the twins and get a glimpse at what the psyche of people have become. Maybe "backwards" isn't so inaccurate. Even Marcos, who I felt empathy with when we get a few details on his recent past. But then he is also one of them, no matter how he might think of himself. There is a normalized cruelty in everything and it's horrific and sad. They're all (at least) baseline anime-level pyschos it's scary.
