Why are there so many repeat names in Austen’s novels? We have sisters named Elizabeth and Mary in both this and P&P. And Anne is used in other books too. Did they only have 10 names to choose from back then lol

"[Captain Wentworth] had not made less than twenty thousand pounds by the war."
I was curious what this would translate into in today's economy, so I used a couple different calculators online to find that £20k in 1814 equals ~£1.4 million in December 2025 which also equals ~$1.9 million in the US. Anne and Lady Russell are kicking themselves right now 😂

Happy to report that there is an audiobook version narrated by Cynthia Erivo which is very well done 💚

"Anne haggard, Mary coarse, every face in the neighborhood worsting; and the rapid increase of the crow's foot about Lady Russell's temples had long been a distress to him."
RIP Sir Elliott, you would've ADORED botox and filler

An annoying thing about the audiobook is that the narrator doesn't do the best job at differentiating between Natalie's thinking voice and her talking voice. And sometimes Natalie thinks batshit crazy things but she's so pyscho that I would believe it if she had actually said them, until I go read the text and find out she actually was just thinking those things in her head.

This book was crazy omg I never would've guessed what was coming at the end. I wasn't expecting things to go back and forth between the two timelines, and that was really interesting and neat. I've read quite a few books like this with unhinged, unlikable narrators who do crazy shit, but they always lose their steam at the end. I'm glad to say that this isn't the case in Yesteryear. Burke did a great job with writing Natalie, and I can't wait to see the movie.

Because the author is Australian, she used the “arse” spelling of “ass”. But the audiobook narrators have American accents so instead of saying it like “ass” (which is what “arse” with an Australian accent sounds like) they’re literally saying the “r” in “arse” and it h sounds so stupid.

Desire swirled in his gut as he raked his gaze over her. He didn’t think he wouldn’t ever not have that reaction when she was presented to him like this.
Someone please tell me wtf this sentence is supposed to mean because I cannot decipher the triple negative😭
