Hii 💕, I have been trying for some time to find a book for my boyfriend in the sci-fi/epic fantasy genre. I am really big on showing affection through gifts and while it comes very easy to me to combine my two loves shopping and books for the people I love I have been struggling to find the correct one for him because I usually tend to lean towards other genres, dark academia, horror, romance, light fantasy...

I have searched every list and quest on the app and taken countless notes on books that get mentioned more often such as Robin Hobbs works, the grace of kings, the blade itself, the fifth season or city of stairs 👑⚔️🧝‍♂️ But as I said I am afraid to trust my judgment because we have very different tastes

He has an fixation on the LOTR books and in all the years I have known him he has refused to touch anything else since because he has "met perfection" Mostly he reads non fiction, mainly books about his studies, chemistry major (but I can't work with that sorry)

So to if any you who are more experienced with the genre and the books that aren't so well known, I would love to know what you would recommend!

While this extended essay in fact employs a fictional narrator and narrative to explore women both as writers and characters in fiction, the manuscript for the delivery of the series of lectures, titled Women and Fiction, and hence the essay, are considered nonfiction. The essay is seen as a feminist text, and is noted in its argument for both a literal and figural space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by patriarchy.

If you're looking for a history of salt; neatly packaged, easy to follow for an uninitated reader, and full of fun facts about salt to share at dinner parties; this is not the book for you. Kurlansky's writing is dense and dry. The only real difference between this book and a book intended for historians to read is the somewhat lacking bibliography and lack of footnotes. There is no overarching narrative line to link diverse chapters covering everything salt from cultures all over the world, making the book feel choppy and difficult to keep up with.

But despite its organizational flaws, you can't deny Kurlansky did his research. This book is overflowing with fascinating information, if you have the endurance to get through the book. When the book ends, you get the sense that Kurlansky simply had to limit the length of his book and decide to end it there. It certainly wasn't because he ran out of stuff to talk about. I learned so much by reading this book and it certainly is exactly what the title says: A World History. I loved bouncing around different cultures, different time periods, and learning about how salt was used. I especially loved the recipes that were included, they were so interesting to read about.

While I did thoroughly enjoy the content of the book, I would've loved to read more about the biological importance of salt to life and understand chemically how the different types of salt were best suited for their individual purposes. I have a Biochemistry background though, so I acknowledge this information might not have been as much of a glaring omission to others. Still a chapter on the subject would've been really interesting!

Some readers care about tracking their exact edition and page count for progress, while others are just here for reviews and conversation. Where do you want to take it?

Ways to discuss different mediums and ways of reading.

Would be really cool to be able to post reading related things and not have to attach it to a book exactly. Like discussions that are still reading related, but not specifically to a single book or series.

Something like asking what everyone's goto e-reader is, or if they've found some super immersive audiobooks, book box subs, etc.

I know y'all are a small team so please take this as a whenever far in the future feature request/suggestion! Also if you're ever looking for outside contributions to the site, I'm always happy to get my hands on frontend/middleware tasks so I can stay current when I get some free time between the kids and work 😅
