update (march 15th 2026): just updated this list from 36 books to 62, including some upcoming releases. if anyone has any recommendations, now would be a good time to chuck them at me as i have a little bit of time to research and flesh out this list!
This is a great list! If you're taking any recommendations, I think Lakewood by Megan Giddings would fit perfectly here! It's a psychological horror with plenty of surreal elements.

ooh thank you!
Lakewood is so good!
Right?? It was such a good blend of horror and social commentary. I can't say too much here because I don't wanna spoil anyone, but god, did I feel bad for the main character đ
There's no way I can respond efficiently without spoiling. Just know that I completely agree with you. đ«ąđ
Great list!! I always love finding new Black authored horror, Iâm adding some of these to my TBR right away! I have a few recs for you too âșïž On Sundays She Picked Flowers by Yah Yah Scholfield is a new release you might be interested in adding as well! Itâs a great exploration of inter generational trauma, the legacy of slavery, and trying to heal from it. Catherine House by Elizabeth Thomas is a gothic/dark acedemia horror that is also well worth the read if youâre down for a slow burn plot. I really appreciated and respected the way it explores racism in academia, and the carefully manufactured exclusivity of Ivy League-style educational bodies.

thank you for these recs and for all of the info! will definitely look into these <3
this looks epic!! excited to read
Ooh! I didn't know we could make recs. If we (still) can, I think The Reformatory would also be a good fit!

always keen for recommendations! thank you!
Great List! Sooo many books, so little time
May I suggest adding The Girl in Red? It's a YA post-apocalyptic retelling of Little Red Riding hood featuring a POC FMC.

thanks for the rec! this list is specifically for Black authors writing Black characters, so just wanted to confirm that thatâs the case for this book? i couldnât find that info looking it up and noticed your comment says POC not Black :)
Thanks for the clarification! Upon further review, The Girl In Red is not a good candidate for this list - the author is not Black.
The MC is of mixed Black/white heritage FWIW, this figures into the story in several key ways.

thanks for letting me know!! still good to have the rec out there!
You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron is great! It is young adult though so not sure if that fits the list

ooh yes iâve heard of this one! iâll definitely check it out, thanks for the rec!
