Oh no, it changes to a different character now. I really hope it goes back and ties a bow at the end with them. What’s this type of writing called so I can avoid it. The same thing happened with ‘before the coffee gets cold’. I’m just not into reading sort of short stories in an actual book setting. Grr.

‘Fly you fools’ suddenly makes a lot more sense to me☺️ Fly and flight is being used liberally and to me that makes a lot more sense now! I wish they had used that more in the films as well. I do also find it hard to disregard the film when I’m reading, but I am enjoying it!

I really enjoyed this book. I don’t think it’s perfect, but it’s really lovely. It has some whimsical elements to it which are nice. Aragorn being called strider almost exclusively is cool - gives him much more of that ranger feel. I do think Tolkien’s sentence structure makes it difficult for me to get completely immersed for some reason. I like the thorough descriptions and the story, but for some reason the word choice and structure is off to me at times. It’s a choice anyway.
Additionally, sometimes it almost feels like a children’s book to me and I think it’s because of the thorough descriptions and it feels like the reader is being guided through the story a lot. It’s a lot less humourous and scary that the film, and I generally find it hard not to compare it to the film that I’ve seen a million times.

We're very excited to announce our next Special Event Readalong, Mardi Gras + Carnival! This will run from January 15 - February 15.
This round's selections center stories from Afro-Caribbean + Black New Orleans culture. Check out the Special Events page (in the More tab on the app, or click the purple banner on the Discuss page on web).
The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings: An imaginative New Orleans Urban Fantasy exploring the music and magic of NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana).
Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson: A touching Caribbean-American contemporary fiction exploring family secrets and the weight of the past. Series adaptation on Hulu!
You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi: An funny + tender upmarket romance (warning: explicit 🌶️) exploring Afro-Carribean culture and healing trauma though love.
The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom: A lyrical + politically sharp memoir chronicling 100 years of love, resilience, and class in NOLA. A clear-eyed account of Black New Orleans, up through the devastating events of Hurricane Katrina.
What's a Special Event? Each quarter, we run a short 1 month readalong showcasing diverse voices in literature. Read one of the selections and comment or post in the forum during the Readalong to earn a special badge. Unlike the Seasonal Readalongs, you do not earn a special badge for reading all the selections.
Excited to see the discussions for this event!
Happy Reading, Jennifer & Lucy
