claims to be a satire but is full of repetitive, overwritten musings on feminism. i agree with a lot of what the author says, but she doesn’t trust the reader to understand nuance and insists on spelling out everything. there is very little plot and blake skips over the most intriguing aspect of the premise in favour of didactic political commentary. it’s like a substack think piece on feminism stretched to novel length with shreds of plot and character haphazardly thrown in

I enjoy the way this book is written overall, but god, the internet-speak that pops up from time to time gets grating. I probably should have been prepared for it given it's literally named after a tiktok meme, but still.
I think what really takes me out is that the book quoted the Leopards Eating People's Faces tweet almost verbatim, but also refuses to call tiktok/youtube by its name. The contrast annoys me more than it probably should 😭

Judging this a bit more harshly as I’m comparing it to his masterpiece Boy Swallows Universe. There was still magic, still beautiful prose, still touching, heartbreaking characters, but I was expecting something a bit darker to happen, and some scenes were predictable. Having said that, love the love that she gives and is given. The Tyrannosaurus Waltz depicts the generational trauma that carries on in life. The descriptions of Oz and her surroundings are vivid and everything that happens to her is palpable. I wish they hired a female illustrator for her drawings to add more authenticity and have some female perspective shine through. Again I’m being picky, it’s still a great win for Dalton and I’ll continue to be a fan of his beautiful writing. 💫🖼️🖌️
