Post from the How Music Works forum
I like this so far, not quite what I was expecting but the writing is engaging and I am curious to see where this goes

I want to like this more than I am, Edward's whole "I'm a monster" inner monolog is driving me crazy though. my copy is due at the library tomorrow and I just can't get myself through the rest of this. maybe I'll pick up a second hand copy and continue later on.

nightjar finished reading and wrote a review...
ok so it has been 2 days since I finished this memoir. I appreciated her dark humour through the situation. My mother and I have a very similar relationship in terms of toxicity. I also speak about my mom in very similar terms. My mom also acts A LOT like hers.
it was validating af to read and felt oddly comforting in a very disturbing way. her style of writing was really engaging to me. it kept me really hooked on what was happening. I'm glad Jennette McCurdy told us her story. it was brutal and so real.
as a personal note: it's also an interesting time in my life to have read this particular book, just before the one year anniversary of being no contact with my mom and also having just booked my first audition to try out stage acting.
I don't feel right rating this book in terms of stars, I would definitely recommend reading this if you too have an abusive narcissist mother and want to read something that will make you feel less alone. I'll be buying a copy eventually so I can annotate and highlight passages for myself.
I know this isn't really a review of this book in a proper way, but it's hard to review this book just due to the nature of the contents.
